Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: Swan Song

by on May.18, 2010, under Drama, Horror, Television

Supernatural Swan Song Sam Dean Lucifer

I have to apologize for this one being late. First off I had to watch this episode not once, not twice, but three whole times before I could wrap my head around it enough to even begin talking about it. Secondly I had a crazy busy weekend (yay to my friend who graduated law school and whose commencement, etc I attended) and finally, for some extra fun, my internet went down. Jeesh.

Like everyone out there, I had a lot of theories about how this season would end. None of them involved Dean living a normal life though. That one took me by surprise, even after he went to visit Lisa a couple episodes ago. When I thought of the possibility of Dean going off to live the apple pie life, it was always something I pictured as part of the series finale (that is, if he survived it of course).

This season ended with all of the characters basically going their separate ways, something that I found very interesting not just because usually at least some of them are together when a season ends, but also because none have any intention of being together. It makes me wonder how next season will start out and where it will go from there. What exactly will bring all of these characters together again now that they’ve all gone off to do different things?

I’m already excited about next season and it’s not even here yet. This is gonna be one long summer. Sigh.

Highlights….

The finale montage, as always, done to “Carry on Wayward Son” by Kansas. Somehow any other song just seems wrong for the season finale now.

Chuck writing the history of the Impala. I loved learning all about her, especially the bits that even Sam and Dean don’t know.

Dean calling Sam a “grown…..overgrown man” and saying that he has to stop treating Sam like a kid, a part of that being that Dean has to grow up too and go along with Sam’s plan to put the Lucifer back in his cage.

Noting that that was the quietest opening scene I think of any Supernatural episode. When the blood went across the screen with the title card, I practically jumped.

Dean’s “Aw, ain’t he a little angel” when he spotted Cas snoozing in the backseat. Then Sam pointing out that “angels don’t sleep” and both of them realizing the implications of what that meant. Cas appears to be heading towards the person he was in the ep ‘The End’ and, as much as I was enjoying his trip to humanity, I realized that I didn’t really want that particular end for him.

Sam asking Dean to let him rot in hell and to go live “some normal, apple pie life”. Oh man, I was not expecting that.

Bobby telling Sam to fight Lucifer and to keep swinging until the end.

Cas not realizing that part of a normal, tearful human goodbye (especially when things appeared as hopeless as they did) was to lie….and then trying to lie and failing miserably at it. Well at least he tried.

Sam asking Dean not to watch him drink the blood. Eep.

Learning about all the little things that the boys have done to the Impala over the years. Loved the little toy soldier in the ashtray. I bet my dad’s old car probably still has some toys stuck in it. Those kinds of ashtrays were awesome toy holders.

Lucifer remarking that Sam was “choc full of Ovaltine”

Lucifer asking Sam to “drop the telanovela”. LOL.

Lucifer quoting the famous “Devil Went Down to Georgia” by the Charlie Daniels Band. “A fiddle of gold against your soul says I’m better than you” is one of the best lines and that’s one of my favorite songs, like, ever. I used to sing it all the time when I was a kid. So awesome that they referenced it in the show.

Dean opening up the cage and having to force his brother to go inside. Yes of course it all turned out to be a trick and Lucifer was never going to step inside, but Dean didn’t know that and I can’t imagine how hard that was for him.

The way Jared played Lucifer, speaking softly and putting in little mannerisms that reminded me of Mark Pellegrino. The whole conversation in the mirror was brilliant.

Lucifer telling Sam that they were “MFEO” (which I had to look up to find out meant “made for each other”).

Finding out how many demons have been watching over Sam his whole life and Lucifer telling him that all those times he ran away, he was running towards him.

Dean calling Cas “Bukowski” (as in Charles Bukowski – my friend had to tell me he was a writer well known for drinking) oh and also calling him a “junkless sissy”.

Finding out that Sam and Dean did things like go to Ozzie concerts and Jayhawks games in the Impala. I also love that Chuck mentioned how they were never really homeless, because they always had the car. I said the exact same thing in my novel-length Supernatural fanfic (‘Black Cat’). Guess great minds think alike eh? Then again, I bet every fan has had the same thought, it’s just nice to actually hear it said on the show.

Dean telling Cas and Bobby that, even if all he was going to see was Michael killing Sam, he was still going to go there and not let his brother die alone. Oh my god, what a line.

Reading SOOO much into the conversation between Lucifer and Michael, and how it related to Sam and Dean. I still would have preferred Dean as Michael but it was still a fantastic scene and Adam (Jake Abel) did a great job.

Dean roaring up in the Impala and popping in a cassette of “Rock of Ages” by Def Leppard. Oh yeah baby!! Love that song. I think this one beats the ‘Renegade’ moment in the season 2 ep ‘Nightshifter’

Cas calling Michael “assbutt” and hitting him with a holy fire Molotov cocktail. That was awesome! Of course then it became less awesome when Lucifer snapped him into a bloody mess a few seconds after. EEEK!!

Not one minute after killing Cas, Lucifer snapping Bobby’s neck like it was nothing. Okay, seriously beginning to wonder if anyone was going to survive this episode.

Dean telling Sam, even as Lucifer was beating the living daylights out of him, that he wasn’t going to leave him. Oh my god….there are no words for what that did to me.

The montage of the boys ending in Dean hugging Sam, all of it happening after Sam spots the little toy soldier and manages to get a grip on Lucifer. Him telling Dean “it’s going to be okay Dean, I’ve got him” was another moment that just killed me.

Dean watching not only one brother have to dive into hell, but both of them, as Sam is forced to take Michael/Adam with him when Michael tries to stop him.

The friggin’ scary good job the makeup department did on Jensen’s face. I found myself unable to look at him, especially when he was sitting on the ground after everyone in the world he cared about had just been killed or sent to hell.

Cas returning??? New and improved!! Bringing back Bobby and healing Dean!! Holy cow!

Aw, so cute the way Dean asked if Cas was God.

Chuck’s comments about how hard endings are and that no matter how much you try “the fans are always gonna bitch”. LOL! Too true.

Cas pointing out to Dean that he actually got what he wanted since they never wanted the battle between Lucifer and Michael to happen on earth, taking out all of humanity with it no matter who won.

Dean fulfilling his promise and going off to live the life that Sam asked him to, even though everything in his being said to go find Sam. The way his voice broke when he told Lisa that he’d like to take her up on that offer of a beer practically broke my heart, as did the hug. I guess he does have someone now to turn to.

Chuck disappearing in a poof?? WTF? Okay so the moment that happened I jumped up and yelled “Chuck is God???!!” because it was the first thing that came to mind. After all, he knew everything that was going to happen and that little “poof” of his was different than the way we’ve seen any other creature disappear on the show so far. No matter what, he is something new, even if he’s not God himself. But for now, that’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

Sam watching Dean living his new life? Or was that Lucifer? WTF? Okay I gotta admit that one threw me, I so wasn’t expecting that and I have no idea what it means. Is Sam out? Is Lucifer coming for Dean?? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Overall an epic episode that is sending this series off in a whole new direction.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Los Angeles – Hunted

by on May.13, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

NCIS LA Hunted Kensi Sam Callen

In this episode, many of the characters were not only dealing with Dom’s recent death, but also the reminders that his passing brought up of others they have lost. Kensi reveals that not only has she now lost Dom, but also her father, an ex boyfriend and her ex partner. That is quite a bit of hurt for one person to carry around and makes me better understand why she’s so tough. She simply can’t afford to let anyone in for fear of causing herself even more pain.

Meanwhile Sam is also dealing with a few difficult issues himself. Trying to take the blame for Dom’s death (like everyone else on the team), he’s also got the problem of his surrogate brother’s part in it. Moe helps them out with finding the man actually responsible for Dom and the two brothers eventually mend their relationship.

The one taking Dom’s death the hardest is Hetty, as evidenced by the fact that she gives Vance a letter of resignation. More than ten years ago she lost another agent named Sullivan and she decides she’s not cut out for the life. Personally I doubted that Linda Hunt was planning on actually leaving the show (especially since I couldn’t find any hint of it online). But I admit I still did wonder whether or not it was going to end up being like the end of season 4 of the original NCIS, with Hetty leaving for a few episodes to get her head on straight.

In the end though, Callen quietly convinces her that she is right where she belongs (with a nice bit of pick-pocketing, I might add).

Overall an episode that showed us how the team is dealing with Dom’s death and how they are moving forward from it.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Borderland

by on May.12, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

NCIS Borderland McGee Tony Gibbs

You know, it’s episodes like this one that make me really happy that I’m a blogger. ‘Borderland’ was so good that, as soon as the final credits rolled, I couldn’t wait to talk about it. I wanted to shout from the rooftops how wonderful it was and luckily I have a forum that allows me to do just that.

Anyone want an example of how to write a good drama with amazing characters that the audience really cares about? Take a look at NCIS. Seven seasons in and this drama is just as interesting (if not more so) than it was in the very beginning.

My favorite parts were all the Abby and Gibbs scenes. We all know that Gibbs sees her like the daughter he never got to see grow up, but we don’t often get to see those two get serious. Well this episode put a chance to all that as Abby is put on the trail of a cold case and discovers that her victim was killed by the man she loves like a father.

Highlights….

The big red bow on the car in the crusher. So cute…..well right up until the car started bleeding.

This line – “eew! What are you like, forty?” – LOL! That was awesome!

Tony in the Groucho Marx glasses

Gibbs giving his hat to the little boy. Aww!

Abby’s entire red outfit. From the shirt to the cuffs to the collar and the matching phone. Loved it.

This line – “What the biohazardous material is this?” – I am so gonna be using that one.

Palmer and Ducky both doing pretty good Fred Flintstone imitations.

Abby going off on how she hoped that McGee wasn’t going to be her escort and then him walking in the door. LOL.

Eeeew! I got no problem with blood and gore, but feet? Ick.

Alejandro calling McGee “McGoo”. So cute how jealous McGee is of that guy.

Tony’s terrible yet sorta funny “out on a limb” joke. It was bad but hey, at least he figured out that the tats on the feet meant that the killer was targeting bikers.

Abby’s dressing down of the student who tried to give her trouble in class. Don’t these people know not to mess with a forensic scientist? I love that Abby could not only tell how many cats the woman had but also that she was ovulating. Nice.

Recognizing the church during Abby’s fieldtrip as the same one seen in Gibbs’ flashback to when he killed the man responsible for the death of his family. That’s when I knew my suspicions about this episode were right.

McGee offering himself up as a hostage in exchange for Abby and her students.

Knowing as soon as the Reynosa gave Abby the bullet that it was going to turn out to be a lapua, the same kind of ammo that Gibbs used when he was a sniper.

How many times the phrase “toe cheese” was used in the span of 30 seconds. Kinda icky but also pretty darn funny.

Abby’s pajamas. So cute!

McGee and Abby figuring out that Tony and Ziva lied about who took the couch in Paris.

Abby packing up her stuff to leave after she realized that McGee forgot to use bottled water on his toothbrush. Uh oh, poor McGee.

Abby’s version of an alarm clock being a device that causes a minor explosion. So didn’t surprise me at all.

The fact that as soon as Abby realized who murdered Pedro, she immediately started questioning how she ended up on that particular cold case. Have to admit that I hadn’t even thought of it like that. I just assumed it was a coincidence. I totally should have known better. *gives self a head slap*

Poor McGee sucking back the Pepto as he stepped off the elevator and then Gibbs headslapping Tony for trying to make him sicker. LOL.

Watching Gibbs reaction as he realized that the man on Ducky’s was Pedro. Amazing how much Mark can convey without saying a word.

Gibbs arriving in Abby’s lab and the two of them not able to say what they really wanted to with McGee in the room. Turns out Pauley is just as good at saying a lot without words as Mark is. Wow, great scene.

McGee admitting to Tony that he programmed Tony’s browser to automatically “Next” him every 10 seconds.

The entire final scene between Gibbs and Abby in the basement – Abby’s disappointment in finding out that Gibbs actually killed someone in cold blood. Both of them knowing that it wasn’t an accident that she found out. Abby begging Gibbs to tell her that she’s wrong and that it’s all a mistake and him saying that he can’t. Abby asking him to tell her how much like a daughter she is to him and how much he loves her and then admitting that it won’t help, but what will is him telling her that he will love her, not matter what……and then the scene ending there before he replies. Wow. *wipes away tears*

Overall a very nice way to kick off what looks to be another great season finale from this series.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Los Angeles – Found

by on May.06, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

NCIS LA Found

Well they did it, they actually killed off Dom. I guess deep down I knew that was going to happen, but I was still sort of surprised when it actually happened. I figured that Adam Jamal Craig was still leaving the show but for a little while there, I wondered if the character might actually live through his ordeal.

The team gets a lead that Dom is being held by a group of terrorists threatening to execute him if their demands aren’t met. They then go about doing anything and everything they can to find him, including some scare tactics that were very effective, like threatening to throw a man into the ocean handcuffed to a brick. When everything leads to one man that they cannot take into custody by normal means, the team decides to take their threats to extreme measures, causing everyone to decide between saving Dom’s life and their careers.

Meanwhile Dom is trying on his own to escape, not content to just sit idly by when he knows his time is running out. An NCIS agent to the bone, he works every angle he can to get out of his prison – from using a broken mug handle to break out of his handcuffs to befriending one of his captors (who turns out to be Sam’s old friend Moe, the boy he took back from Somalia after killing his father).

In the end, it turns out that Dom is being held not in some faraway land, he’s right there in LA in an old theater. The team finally finds him, just as Dom has broken free and is looking for a way out of his prison.

The saddest part of this show is the fact that the team actually does find Dom and for all intents and purposes, does rescue him. But in the ensuing firefight, Dom gets in the line of fire while protecting Sam and is fatally wounded.

Watching Sam and Callen desperately try to bring Dom back while the rest of the team watches helplessly (most of them miles away and watching via cameras), I felt the first tears fall. Then as Callen had to pull Sam off, telling him that they had never given up on the younger man, even more came.

The closing song at the end was the final straw for me, I can’t think of anything more perfect for the sadness of that scene than Peter Gabriel’s “Grieve”

Overall a sad but extremely well done episode.

Farewell Dom.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Obsession

by on May.05, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

NCIS Obsession

I really liked how much we got to see a serious Tony in this episode. Like Gibbs said in ‘Flesh and Blood’, Tony likes to play a clown but we all know that’s just his way of dealing with things. Gibbs drinks bourbon and builds boats, and Tony goofs off. Different solutions, same results.

Tony doesn’t like to expose that soft underbelly of his, preferring to hide behind a nearly constant barrage of pranks, movie references and silliness. It’s only when he becomes a little more somber, that we get a peek into what might really be going on in that mind of his.

In this episode, Tony mysteriously becomes obsessed with the sister of a man whose murder the team is tasked to solve. I felt like we never really understand why he does it, but then again, do any of us really know why we become obsessed with someone or something? Like the rest of us, Tony is simply human and I don’t think even he understood why he reacted to the woman the way he did.

In the end, the woman dies (already poisoned before they find her) and much like Ziva and her ‘Dead Man Walking’, Tony never gets the chance to really get to know her.

Highlights….

Pausing my DVR to look at all the pics on Tony’s Facebook-like homepage. I love that he added the pic he took of Ziva in Paris, and that there’s one up there I didn’t recognize from any ep, making me wonder if it’s a shot of Michael that they got permission to use. Nice touch.

The chick Tony is dating updating not only her status, but Tony’s to say that they were in a “committed relationship”….without telling him. I wonder how many times that has really happened to someone?

The look on Gibbs’ face when Hart showed up in Vance’s office, wearing a temp employee badge.

Abby snapping at Palmer, but Tony knowing immediately how to handler her, by giving her a hug before he asked her a question. So cute.

The roundhouse high five between Tony and Palmer. Loved it!

Tony threatening to “GibbsSlap” McGee. I love how that has become a word. LOL.

Palmer finding something on the body that Ducky missed. As much fun as it was to have him be the butt of the joke last week, I also like that he’s starting to grow up and be more a part of the investigations.

Abby holding her ground with Hart and not allowing a tour when she didn’t want it. Go Abby!

The way Tony said “sounds nice, man” to the guy playing the saxophone outside the bookstore. Kinda reminded me of when Tony had to play a street musician once when he was undercover. Maybe he appreciated the guy’s music since he’d done it himself.

The way Gibbs said “Got to go, Captain” and then cut off the man who had cut him off earlier. Ha! Nobody messes with Gibbs.

Gibbs putting on his glasses to look at the screen in Abby’s lab. I just love it when he wears those.

Ducky’s story of the infamous ‘umbrella murder’ reminding me that I wrote something exactly like that in a story once. Too weird.

Gibbs saying that if he started locking his front door, he wouldn’t have any social life. LOL! Too true.

McGee once again showing some jealousy after seeing another man paying attention to Abby. Now there’s a couple I actually wouldn’t mind seeing get together on this show.

Ziva worrying about Tony becoming obsessed with Dana. Unlike McGee, I saw no jealousy from her, only concern which was nice considering all that happened with them in the past year.

Tony playing a few keys on the piano in Dana’s house. It really made me feel like he was trying to connect with her any way he could.

Ziva coming up with a movie reference. Nice.

Knowing the moment that Tony took his phone outside that he was talking to Dana.

Gibbs’ description of a microfiche as a “kind of 1970’s version of a flashdrive”. LOL that was awesome, and very accurate.

Tony’s meeting with Dana. I love how he was so quiet and still when he was with her, as if he was trying not to scare her since she’d already been through so much.

The look on Tony’s face when he realized that Dana had been poisoned too. Poor Tony. *whimpers*

Getting to hear Gibbs speak Russian again. Now if he would do that with his glasses on, I think I could die happy. LOL.

Tony showing up in Gibbs’ basement after coming from the hospital and watching Dana die. Like the end of ‘Flesh and Blood’ this whole scene was basically like watching nearly every fanfiction story I’ve ever read come to life. It just confirms what so many of us knew, that when Tony has a really rough day, he seeks out Gibbs as his pseudo father figure.

Gibbs telling Tony that rule #10 (‘never get personally involved in a case’) always gives him trouble too, proving once again how alike they are. So awesome.

Overall a great Tony-centric episode that showed us a much different DiNozzo than the one we usually get to see on the show.
