Positively Positive Review – Castle: Suicide Squeeze

by on Feb.09, 2010, under Comedy-drama, Mystery, Television

Castle Suicide Squeeze

The overall theme of this episode was all about fathers. A murdered man ends up not hiding a mistress, but a long lost daughter. We also find out that Castle is famously fatherless, his mother conceiving him with a man she only knew for a few hours but with whom she “loved a lifetime”. At first I found myself feeling sorry for Castle, even when he pointed out to his daughter that not knowing meant that he could imagine the man as anything. He believes that no man can live up to his expectations and therefore he’s bound to be disappointed if he ever finds him.

Which is why I found the final scene so great – once again his child actors more like his parent as Alexis asks her father to join her in a game of catch, pointing at though his unknown father could be anything, the one thing the mystery man couldn’t be was a dad. A dad who did regular things like play catch with his son.

It was such a sweet ending, made even better when Castle throws the ball and breaks a vase – something I totally saw coming but still laughed at.

Overall a great episode that gave us a little more info about Castle and the father he never knew.

Positively Positive Review – Castle: The Third Man

Castle The Third Man

My favorite part of this episode was watching Beckett and Castle on the accidental double-date. They each make a date and end up at the same restaurant in nearby tables.

They both made the dates in an effort to squash rumors (and reassure themselves) that they weren’t an “item”. Yeah, that plan pretty much backfired. All the two of them can do is talk about the case to their dates, boring the poor people to death. The only time Castle and Beckett show any excitement is when they keep making excuses to get up and talk to each other about the case, discovering that they’ve both had the same ideas.

Their dates actually do end up having a good time. Once Castle and Beckett leave, the two abandoned people actually end up together. Which is something I totally saw coming ,but still laughed at appreciatively.

In the end, Castle and Beckett solve the case and go out for burgers while chatting away about it. Proving of course that these two are meant for each other but have no idea, which makes watching them dance around even more fun for us.

Overall a great episode that showed us what it would be like if Castle and Beckett went out on a date…..sorta.

Positively Positive Review – Castle: Sucker Punch

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic in Castle, season 2, episode 13 “Sucker Punch”Castle - Sucker Punch

Last night Castle did something I hadn’t seen this show do before. It truly brought out the drama in “comedy-drama”.

Having missed some of last season, maybe I missed other episodes of the show that did. But last night felt all new to me and boy howdy, did they do it right.

Castle and Beckett start on a case that seems normal, right up to the point where it leads to the murderer of Beckett’s mother. Suddenly the stakes were high and everything kicked into high gear. Whereas before all the supporting characters were there for comic relief, now they were there for support – from Castle’s mother and daughter showing how much they felt for Beckett by giving her a hug and letting her and Castle speak alone. To the Captain fighting to get the deal Beckett needed to find the bad guy, and finally Detectives Ryan and Esposito covering the fake criminal, risking their lives to help.

“Sucker Punch” was aptly named as that’s pretty much how I felt at the end. Beckett tearfully tried to keep the killer she had just shot (saving Castle’s life) alive long enough to tell her who hired him to murder her mother.

The last scene was great and I loved Beckett telling Castle “I’ve gotten used to you pulling my pigtails”. It describes their relationship perfectly.

Overall a brilliant episode that surprised me with its ability to bring on the serious stuff just as easily as it normally brings on the comedy and romance.

Positively Positive Review – Castle: The Fifth Bullet

Last night as I watched this episode I felt like such a smarty pants. As soon as they found the guy with amnesia, I predicted that he would turn out to be the killer. Heck, I even figured out what the plastic bag was for and that the dog would lead them closer, about a minute before Castle did.

Even as they kept trying to help the guy, figuring he’d been shot by the murderer, I thought I knew better. I was Miss Genius because I knew for a fact he’d turn out to be the bad guy and they might even find out he had been faking all along.

I tried my hardest not to like the character of “J”. I kept telling myself he was bad, he was evil, he was the murderer, I mustn’t like him and I certainly mustn’t hope for him and his ex-wife to get back together.

So when they finally proved that he did it, I went “Aha! I knew it!”…..until I looked at how much time was left in the episode. What’s this? I thought. A case is never solved this soon. Could it be that I was…….wrong??

Sure enough. I was dead wrong and all I have to say is…… YAY!!!

I know, it’s strange to enjoy being wrong but in a case like last night I couldn’t have been happier. Because even though I tried as hard as I could not to, I ended up liking the amnesiac and yes, I even hoped he’d get back with his ex. Watching him walk away at the end of the episode, with her arms around him and the dog happily trotting at their heels, made me very happy.

Who knew that a mystery show could also give us a nice, romantic, happy ending?

Ps: Holy cow! After looking up the episode stats to find out the name of the actor who played “J”, I just realized he played Riley on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I knew he looked familiar but I couldn’t figure out why….duh!

Positively Positive Review – Castle: One Man’s Treasure

Castle One Mans Treasure Molly C Quinn

Every week I watch Castle and like it more and more. As I’ve said before, I was never that much into mysteries but this show has made a convert out of me. I have spoiler-phobia and one of the reasons is because I’m always upset when I can figure out the ending of a show (or movie, book, etc) before it’s over. It’s not nearly as much fun to watch something when you’ve already figured out who the bad guy/girl is.

This show keeps me on my toes. Truthfully I did peg Carlberg as the murderer the moment I saw him. Just something about the character set off all kinds of bells. But as the episode went on, I began to think I was wrong and that’s what I love about this show. Each week it seems that Beckett and Castle figure out whodunit, only to find out they’re on the wrong track and move on to someone else. This week I found myself going along with them and wondering who the murderer was until the last second. I even had a little laugh at myself when I saw that they had indeed gone back to the man I’d suspected in the first place.

I also really enjoyed the little backstory with Alexis working at the precinct as part of her Civics class. Yes of course, the moment she found the little picture book I’m sure we all predicted what would happen. Still, it was a very sweet little moment that made me tear up and once again allowed Molly C. Quinn to shine.

Overall another smart, funny story with a little bit of heart thrown in for good measure.
