Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: Fallen Idols

by on Oct.10, 2009, under Drama, Horror, Television

Dean and Sam face everyone’s worst nightmare….Paris Hilton? –  in Supernatural, Season 5, episode 5 “Fallen Idols”. Image from www.supernaturalfansonline.comSupernatural Fallen Idol

The first “funny” episode of Supernatural had lots of fun jokes, with some serious moments thrown in as well. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I just continue to admire how well the writers can mix the two. Even while having fun and making us laugh, they still toss in enough to keep the overall story arc going.

Highlights….

That guy’s face sticking half out of the windshield. Nice effect.

Dean wanting to take on a simple hunt to get back into the groove of working with Sam again. Made me realize how long it’s been since the two of them really worked as a team.

Of course Dean would’ve heard of “Little Bastard”. His excitement was adorable. So was his fear when he had to crawl under her. Loved how he talked to her and asked her not to hurt him.

Dean freaking out while he was under the car and telling Sam “don’t even look at her, she might not like it.”.

Dean having to shuffle through all his business cards to find the one that matched the story he was telling the bartender. Something tells me he has to do that a lot.

Awesome line from Dean: “I just spent the afternoon up Christine’s skirt. I needed a drink.”

Abraham Lincoln actually growling at that poor guy. Eek!

The sheriff doing everything he can to write off the murders as anything but strange.

Sam remembering enough Spanish to talk to the witness. Nicely done, Sammy!

The guys’ reaction to the woman very clearly pointing out that it was indeed Abraham Lincoln who killed her boss.

Seeing that the guys have their own laptops now. Personally I like Dean’s better. It has a bigger screen and plus, it looks a lot like mine. Just sayin’

Aha! Once again, I knew it! I had a feeling this was all gonna lead us back to a Wax Museum.

Dean asking the manager of the museum whether he ever saw any of the statues moving around and the guy looking at him like he was nuts.

Getting a small giggle over the number “137” on the door, being a fan of Flashforward.

Dean’s harsh comments about Sam while on the phone with Bobby. Whoa.

Dean putting on the hat and saying “Four score and seven years ago, I had a funny hat.” – freaking hilarious!

Sam and Ghandi going at it and Dean bursting in say “is that GHANDI??”. Good stuff.

Sam confronting Dean in the hotel room. I was a little surprised by Dean. Not that I don’t blame him for being mad at Sam. I just thought that he’d decided to go for a clean start, so the way he was treating Sam was a bit of a shock. I’m glad that Sam put his foot down. Pointing out to Dean that one of the reasons he went with Ruby was to get away from Dean was an awesome moment. Really put a lot of it into perspective for me.

The girls’ telling Sam and Dean that Paris Hilton took their friend but “she looked really good, though.”

Sam conducting his own “autopsy” and actually cutting into a body. Ick.

Dean telling Sam “Wow, just when I thought you couldn’t get any geekier.”

Sam saying “Yahtzee!”. Yays! It’s been too long since we’ve heard either of them use that.

Paris Hilton kicking both Sam and Dean’s asses.

Okay I’ll admit it. I had very strong doubts about Paris being on this show. Honestly it’s very rare that I watch her and she doesn’t annoy the crap out of me. I thought she did a great job though, poking fun at herself and celebrities in general.

Sam’s reaction to Dean saying he’d never even seen House of Wax. I laughed so hard at that. I knew they wouldn’t be able to resist messing with Jared. Would love to see them poke a little fun at Jensen some day. Maybe a Devour reference?

Whoa….the axe belonged to their dad?

Okay seriously, I nearly fainted when I thought for a second there that John was going to show up. That would have been so awesome and since I work hard at staying completely spoiler-free, I thought it was possible. Oh well, getting to see Sam chop off Paris’ almost made up for it.

Sam telling Dean “Dude, you just got whaled on by Paris Hilton.”

Dean telling Sam that the sheriff is putting out an APB on Paris Hilton. Awesome.

Dean realizing that he’s just as much to blame for the Apocalypse and what happened to Sam as Sam himself, and the two of them deciding to just fight everything that gets in their way….on the same level.

Dean offering to let Sam drive. Awww!

The super extra long previews giving us glimpses of a bunch of upcoming episodes. We only just saw enough to whet my appetite and get me really excited for the rest of the season. Looks like they’re not holding anything back. Loved that it was all done to a great version of “Superstition” by Beck, Boggert & Appice.

Overall a pretty funny episode that was, surprisingly enough, not ruined by the appearance of Paris Hilton.

Thanks to www.heardontv.com for the song info from this episode.

I feel like this episode broken down into moments is much better than when the episode as a whole is looked at. While I liked a lot of what went on the episode, the funny and the brother moments, I feel like I was a little disappointed with it as a whole.

Sam and Dean doing research together with their own laptops made me smile. Sammy doing research made me smile. It made me realize how long its been since we saw them working a case just like old times.

Sam yelling out “Yahtzee” made me smile even bigger. I can not even remember the last time that Sam said this. To be honest, I remember it mostly as a Dean saying and therefor I felt like it meant more having Sam use it.

I’ve been keeping up with some spoilers here and there and I was still a little hopeful we might get to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan for a little bit in the end. I just thought that maybe it was the best kept secret in the entire series. : )

I’m glad that we got all the brother moments and had them sit down and talk. I think there was a lot of important things that they needed to get out in the open and hopefully now they can move past it and for the first time become true partners and not just big brother and little brother.

The Soon preview looks ridiculous and I am so excited for these upcoming episodes.

    Hey Trin,

Well I’m glad I’m not the only one who was hoping we’d get to see Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

I agree, I’m glad everything is out in the open with them now and seeing them go forward as equals, rather than big brother and little brother, will be interesting.
