Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: Abandon All Hope…

The title of this episode says it all, because once I got to the end of it, that’s about how I felt. With major character deaths and the Winchesters’ only way to kill Lucifer failing miserably, we have to wonder what else can go wrong. This winter finale was brutal and made me feel like the Apocalypse is truly at hand. It also left me wondering how many more of our warriors are going to die in the battle.

Highlights…..

Love the new version of a crossroads. I always wondered how us city folk were supposed to find one of those. Good to know that I have the option.

Mark A Sheppard is awesome and I was so happy to see him appear as Crowley. When he came on screen I actually cheered.

There’s always been a debate as to whether a male crossroads demon would still seal a deal with a kiss with a man, good to see that it’s always the same.

Ooh….nice undercover work by Cas.

Writing the sigil on the underside of the rug was a pretty good plan…too bad it didn’t work though.

Crowley’s opinion of Lucifer was very interesting and not expected. Never thought a demon would happily hand over the Colt. I’m intrigued.

Even though it didn’t work, you gotta admire Sammy for trying to shoot Crowley with the Colt.

Crowley screaming at the boys and calling them morons was classic. Okay seriously, we need to see more of him again.

Yes! A new song and a Santana one to boot. I love “Oye Como Va”.

Cas knocking back shots: “I think I’m starting to feel something.” – LOL!

Dean once again wanting Sam to stay back and Sam once again talking him into it. So predictable, boys, but that’s why we love you.

Dean trying to seduce Jo was hilarious. Especially the part where she turned his ass down. You go, Jo!

I love that Bobby wanted to take a picture of everyone before they went to hunt Lucifer. It gave me a really bad feeling though.

Whoa! Reapers everywhere! Soooo creepy.

Lucifer once again talks a nice talk, pointing out that Cas is next in line to be hunted and killed by the angels. Yay for Cas not listening to it.

Hell Hounds? I didn’t think they could just attack anyone that didn’t make a pact with a crossroads demon. They sure are freaking scary – invisible or not.

Bobby telling Dean “It’s okay boy, that’s why I’m here”, oh man that just killed me. Especially when Dean almost lost it after that. The fact that Bobby was able to keep Dean together just shows once again how much of a father he is to those boys.

Great line from Dean: “Hasn’t Death been tromping all over the place? I mean hell, I’ve died several times myself.”

Oh man….even before she opened her mouth, I know Jo was going to suggest something that had her somehow saving the boys and dying in the process. She’s right, the number one priority is killing Lucifer.

That final kiss between Jo and Dean, oh man, that is too much.

Ellen deciding to stay with Jo to let the Hellhounds in….okay, not sure how much more I can take.

Jo dying on Ellen’s shoulder before she could set off the bomb. That’s when I really lost it. Especially when Ellen called her “my good girl.” That is the hardest I’ve cried during any episode of this series – hands down.

Sam and Dean deciding on no last words was perfect. After all, how many times have both of them not only been faced with death but actually died? Haven’t they said it all before?

Whoa! I just love that Dean was able to sneak up on Lucifer. But I knew right away it didn’t work. That was just too easy.

Lucifer comparing himself and Michael to Dean and Sam – yep, there’s no doubt of the similarities. They are really hinting around to a final battle between all four of them. Two as angels, within the bodies of the two as vessels.

Wow….Crowley was right. The way Lucifer said “they’re just demons” was awful, and I don’t even really like demons.

I can see that Cas has learned a lot from working with the boys. At one point I think he would’ve just tried to bully his way out of a trap with only a demon there watching him. It may have worked and it may not, but to talk her up while he casually undid the bolts on the pipe, now that was genius. I love that he used Meg’s body as a ramp over the fire. Genius.

Yep, I totally knew that Cas was going to show up just in time to get Sam and Dean out of there. He didn’t stop Death from arriving, but he did at least save them.

Losing two people in the Winchester “family” like that – it really got to me. Not just that they’re gone, but what it means in terms of the battle, the Apocalypse, etc. Killing (somewhat) main characters sends a very heavy message and I wonder if the end of the series might actually see an end to them all. At this point I don’t see any other way out. Even if they manage to kill Lucifer, it’s not like the boys and Bobby can go on to a “normal” life, right?

Overall the saddest episode of this series that I’ve seen so far – showing us that the Apocalypse is not going to be won easily and there are probably more casualties to come.

Another excellent review. I too lost it when Jo died in Ellen’s arms – that whole scene … sniff. I thought the ep was a great way to end the year even though the major deaths seemed like an omen for the end of the season. I’m freaking out thinking about which brother (or both!!) is going to die in the end.

I have to mention though that I have to wonder if the writers of “Abandon all hope…” aren’t aware of a book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman called “Good Omens”. One of the main characters is a demon named Crowley who is not exactly thrilled with the end of the world coming up. The Crowley’s were a bit different from each other but I think they have the same attitude after being on earth for so long. They have a good thing and don’t want it to end.

In anticipation of the episode, I reread Good Omens and a few times something the authors wrote reminded me about this season of Supernatural. Or, maybe I’m just seeing things…

Ugh, don’t even get me started on that scene…I tear up just thinking about it. Man, does Kripke and crew know how to make me cry.

I really can’t make up my mind. Part of me wants them both to die in a blaze of glory and the other part is freaking out at the idea of there being no more Supernatural. I don’t know which part is going to win.

Ah interesting…I haven’t read that book but no, it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if someone on the writing team had. We all get inspired by the things we see, hear and read, those guys aren’t any different.

Either way I’m freaking out that there’s going to be no more Supernatural. There aren’t enough good shows out there anymore…

As for which brother (or either) is going to survive, the sick thing is that my bro and I started discussing it more than a year ago. Oy! And, now I can’t believe we’re so close to finding out which scenario is going to play out. My favorite is that they both live, but it just doesn’t seem the most likely (or plausible) outcome. I have to believe that Kripe will end it in a way that will be satisfying no matter the outcome.
