Michael Weatherly in NCIS

I just read this bit of great news over on www.daemonstv.com and just had to share. So happy to hear that one of my favorite actors is going to continue to play one of my favorite characters for a good long while. As long as they keep writing it the way they have recently (especially in episodes like “Flesh and Blood” from this past season), I’ll keep on watching for years to come.

Here’s a little snippet of the article…

The producers of NCIS have inked a new deal for Michael Weatherly that will keep him on the cast beyond the upcoming eighth season, according to Michael Ausiello. The details of Weatherly’s new deal were not released other than to state that it was a multi-year deal.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Los Angeles – Callen, G.

by on May.28, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

NCIS Los Angeles Callen G

From the moment I first saw the NCIS LA crossover episodes last year on NCIS, I knew that I was gonna like this new spin-off. The first season has done nothing except prove me right which is cool because, well, who doesn’t like it when they’re right?

Another thing I knew right off the bat was that Callen was going to turn out to be my favorite character. No it’s not just because Chris O’Donnell is cute, though that doesn’t hurt, but because “G.” is a great character. We’ve always known very little about Callen and while it’s not unusual for a show to give us nothing about a character at first, it is unusual for the character himself not to know anything about his past, not even his own name.

In this episode, we follow along as Callen gets some clues to his past – including the fact that he had an older sister. Of course we didn’t get the closure or the happy ending when it turns out that the woman living under his sister’s name is actually another person entirely and his real sister is dead. So even though a few questions were answered, a bunch more have been asked, which sets us up nicely for season 2.

My favorite parts…

The way Callen tried to reach through the cage when he saw there was a file on him and he couldn’t get it out before the place went up in flames. The amount of longing in his eyes was torturous and I just wanted to break down the damn door for him.

Sam sounding insulted that there were no records on him but two whole boxes on Hetty. Oh c’mon, like that’s really a surprise. I’m telling ya, that lady’s got some secrets. I just know it.

Hetty knowing all the answers to all the questions that Callen was ready to ask her. Of course she did have an advantage, since all of the answers were “no”.

Callen getting Eric to tell him what they had on the case before Hetty could officially call and tell him that Callen was off the case. Wow, I don’t know if I would’ve been brave enough to ignore Hetty’s calls like that. Go Eric!

The appearance of Kort (who used to work with Callen? Interesting) and him pointing out that no one calls him by his first name so Callen isn’t missing anything. I love that Callen said it’s because no one likes Kort. LOL, now I’m starting to think that Callen and Tony might get along great. Uh oh….I feel a fanfic idea coming on.

Hetty telling Callen that there’s no point in sending Callen home because it would just move him from is office chair to his office couch. LOL.

Callen working off the stress by going to the shooting range. Somehow that doesn’t surprise me at all. Considering how much stress he’s probably had in his life, it’s no wonder he’s such a great shot.

The way Callen got Nate to get info on the case for him. Pretty sneaky how he kept getting what he needed without technically breaking any rules.

Loved the car chase but I completely lost my cool when Callen’s car flipped over. I totally thought he was gonna end up in a hospital.

Callen in a totaled car, hanging upside down from his seatbelt and STILL able to take out the bad guy. Is that badass or what??

Callen’s adamant declaration that he didn’t have a sister. I just don’t think the he wanted to even acknowledge the possibility because it would mean that there was someone out there who had abandoned him. When he started to remember and the single tear dropped from his eye…..oh man. Killer scene.

Being terrified as Amy/Hannah kept trying to shoot the bad guy but kept missing. Eek.

Callen finally finding out that he has a sister only to find out that she’s dead, then hearing that she always missed him and cried herself to sleep when she was a little girl because she wanted her little brother. When Hannah was nearly out the door, I was practically screaming for him to ask her what his name was. Then he did and I lost it when all he got was “Baby Brother”. Oh, poor Callen….

Nate figuring out that the same person has been filling out the addresses in the book and watching Callen ever since he was a child. HUH???

Hetty once again knowing everything about everything and somehow getting the location where Callen’s sister was buried so he could say goodbye. Then him finding flowers and a card from what looks like a parent?? Is it his and Amy’s parent or maybe Hannah’s? Oh boy, so much to ponder for next year.

Overall a really good season ending with not so much a cliffhanger as a huge question that is ready to be answered in season 2.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Rule Fifty-One

by on May.27, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

NCIS Rule Fifty One Gibbs

You know, the problem with declaring yourself as the Queen of Positive Reviews is that you have to actually live up to it. Okay so maybe I haven’t actually proclaimed myself that yet, but since I just said it, let’s call it an official proclamation and leave it at that. I’m sure I can find a crown and throne on Ebay, right?

Anyway, moving on. Like I said, the trouble with saying that you’re going to do nothing but positive reviews is that if something doesn’t hit you as totally positive right away, you can’t write about it. Hence the reason that my review for the NCIS seventh season finale is late. It wasn’t that I disliked the episode, not at all, but I was a bit confused at first and had to figure out exactly what I was going to say about it.

Then it hit me that being confused can actually be a positive thing. How’s that, you say? Well it means for one thing that the episode was anything but boring or predictable – two adjectives that are pretty much the worst things I can say about a tv show. If I am sitting there not interested in what’s going to happen next or, worst yet, able to predict every single plot twist, I hate it.

The fact that I couldn’t tell whether the finale (and subsequent season 8 premiere) was about Gibbs getting kidnapped, the report of his murder of Pedro going public at NCIS, Abby and Gibbs’ relationship, Franks going missing (and losing a finger), Tony’s assignment to follow and report on Alejandro or Reynosa showing up at Jackson Gibbs’ store (eek!), well I’m gonna take that as a good thing. That means that I’m not sure where the premiere will start out next year and which storyline it will be about. Heck, maybe it will be all of them and that’s what makes it even more exciting.

My favorite parts…

Watching the stable hand lunging the horse and really wanting to say “pick up your lunge line!” (flashbacks to being a riding coach and assistant trainer, you’re never supposed to let the line hit the ground so that your horse can’t trip over it)

Gibbs shaking the dirt out of his hair, not seemingly bothered by the fact that he’d just been kidnapped. I loved how calm he was through the whole thing, even when she started threatening his friends and family. He never gave her an inch.

Kinda digging the way Gibbs looked all scuffed up in dirty jeans and shirt. He’s usually so well put together, it was kind of a nice change.

Gibbs asking Reynosa if she was doing him favors when she threatened his mother-in-law. LOL.

Tony’s grimace when he found out they were riding to Mexico in a C130 instead of the GV he had been hoping for.

The whole “wink” conversation between Tony and Ziva outside MTAC.

Finding out that Alejandro was not only working with Reynosa…..he’s her brother!

The discussion between Tony, Ziva and Abby about the seriousness of Gibbs bringing up a rule in the 40’s.

Thinking the riddle Gibbs’ father told him was pretty cool.

Gibbs rubbing in the fact that he can still talk to his father to Reynosa and Alejandro and then tempting the man to kill man. Man, that was intense.

Tony and Ziva promising each other that they wouldn’t get on the plane without Gibbs….and opening the door to find Gibbs standing there.

Ziva nudging Tony to get him to stop pushing Gibbs on the plane and him going on anyway. I love that Tony has always been brave enough to go toe to toe with Gibbs.

Ducky’s mind going blank for the first time and Palmer helping him out by “teeing the ball up” for him. I also loved Ducky’s little golfing story and how they moved the camera back when he demonstrated hitting the ball.

Trying to figure out what the heck kind of phone it was that Gibbs was using when he called to warn his father.

Ziva and Tony doing all the “McGee” stuff without him. Guess they do have a few computer skills themselves.

Vance mentioning that Hetty got him on to a studio tour in LA. LOL, I knew she had connections.

Being completed flabbergasted by the scary conversation between Vance and Gibbs. Even knowing now that Gibbs was doing his best to tell Vance what was going on without actually saying the word, it’s still intense seeing them go at each other like that.

Abby knowing exactly why Gibbs put a guard at her door, and telling him that it terrifies her when he violates his own rules. Aw, poor Abby.

Gibbs only able to give Abby a hug and a kiss in response to her asking who was after her. It was so hard to watch him struggling to keep everyone he loved safe without being able to tell anyone about what was happening.

Vance putting Tony in charge of the mission to get Dean and knowing that it was because he was giving Gibbs free reign to do what he needed to, even if he didn’t know what it was.

After the shootout at the airport, the way Tony flexed his fingers and gripped his gun again. I’ve noticed him doing that a couple times over the course of the series. It’s an interesting little habit and it’s got me wondering if there’s a reason he does it.

Finding out that Vance had bugged Gibbs phone. Clever boys!

The conversation between Gibbs and Vance in the park. Vance basically telling Gibbs that he knows about Pedro’s death, doesn’t care, and is going to help him out with Alejandro. Very cool.

McGee pausing in the doorway to look back in puzzlement when Vance said he needed to see Tony instead of him. Had me curious too.

I know I said I liked Gibbs scruffy in the beginning of the ep but I took it back after I saw him in the suit in the end.

Ziva looking down as she took her oath and noticing the two empty seats that should have been filled by Tony and Gibbs.

See Tony obviously undercover and following Alejandro in Mexico and knowing that was what Vance had needed him for.

Hart visiting Gibbs to tell him that she helped Bell partly because she wanted to know more about him, and that she is also going to help him with his case now that the report is out about Pedro’s murder.

Franks calling Tony “Probie”. So cool!

Finding out that rule #44 is “first things first, hide the women and children” (after hearing Gibbs give that message to Franks in the previous ep and not knowing what it meant).

Gibbs remembering when he decided to become a cop and why he did it in the first place. Then pulling out a piece of paper to write out a new rule – #51 “Sometimes – You’re Wrong”. Which I took to mean that he was realizing what he did to Pedro was wrong. As a cop now he knows that murdering someone isn’t right, even if you think they deserve it.

Reynosa showing up at Jackson’s store and wondering where that would lead us next season.

Overall a jam-packed season finale that has set up the show to go in a lot of directions next year.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Los Angeles – Burned

by on May.19, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

NCIS Los Angeles Burned Callen

Boy do I love these kinds of episodes. An agent in trouble, left out on his own, a team trying to help but being cut off from doing so. Man, I just eat this stuff up with a spoon.

Five minutes into the episode, Callen finds out that his cover has been compromised. He immediately goes on alert, putting into action a plan that obviously has been worked out for just such a contingency. Soon he finds out that the man behind it all knows more about him than he does himself and Callen has to decide between protecting his friends and getting some information he desperately wants.

Highlights….

Cracking up at the fact that Callen’s current cover is as an insurance salesman. Well that’s one way to keep people from asking about what you do.

Sam and Kensi’s discussion about the guy who came on to her the previous night and him running the “game” on her. LOL.

Hetty ordering them to go dark when the Eric couldn’t get control of the virus, leaving Callen on his own. Whoa.

The way Callen was able to fast-talk his way through the meet with people he’d never met and acting like someone else. Damn, he’s good.

Hetty calling in Renko to give them a hand. I was wondering when he’d be making another appearance.

Sam and Callen meeting at a rally point they picked out five years ago. It’s so cool to see how much history these guys have together.

Hetty knowing that Sam had met Callen without even needing to ask. Gotta love her. She’s always at least three steps ahead of all of them.

The look between Eric and Nate when Callen’s phone started to ring and neither of them wanted to answer it. OMG that was hilarious! Loved it.

Jumping a little when Renko got hit. I forgot he had a vest on and for a second there I wondered if we were going to lose another agent. Whew.

Callen offering to take himself off the case because he can’t be sure whether his personal feelings are going to get in the way.

Eric telling Hetty that the entire NCIS agency had been compromised, and her immediately ordering Callen back on the case, personal feelings or not.

Eric telling Callen that being asked to put the virus back online was akin to committing “technological malpractice”. LOL.

Hetty pointing out to Callen that he might be losing his one chance to find out about his past if Keelson decided he’d rather die than be caught.

Eric getting a positive match on the face of Keelson, only to find that he doesn’t exist anywhere in cyberspace. Uh oh.

Callen lowering his gun when he was asked if he could live the rest of his life without knowing what “that ‘G’ stands for”…..but still being able to take the guy out when he had no other choice. Man, I can’t imagine how hard that must have been for him.

Hetty asking Callen how he felt about knowing the man who hired Keelson was still out there and his reply that he wouldn’t be able to answer that until he tracked them down.

Eric running up saying that the case wasn’t over. Aha! I had a feeling this one was going to be a two-parter. Looks like this show is following in the original NCIS footprints by having a two-part finale.

Overall an exciting episode that looks to be leading us into a very exciting first season finale.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Patriot Down

by on May.19, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

NCIS Patriot Down Gibbs

One of the things I’ve always liked about this show is how well they can play out really long story arcs. The first time we found out about Gibbs murdering the man who killed his family was all the way back in season four. Here we are in season seven and finally all of it is coming to a head. Gibbs’ secret was bound to come out some time and now someone is out for revenge.

Highlights…

Getting another chance to see Gibbs ride. I especially had to giggle since the fanfic I’m currently writing features the whole team on horseback.

Giggling again at Tony saying “Ah graduation, for many an alcohol induced purple haze”. After attending my friend’s law school commencement and subsequent party (at a pub, no less) this past weekend, I can attest to that one. LOL.

McGee doesn’t like s’mores?? Sacrilege!

Tony telling McGee to “zip up, you’re inner geek is showing”…and McGee looks at his fly. LOL.

Finding out that body on the beach was Macy, who played the lead agent for the NCIS LA team in the crossover eps last year. Whoa, total shock.

When they gave the news to about Macy’s death to her teammate, I couldn’t help but to wonder what it would have been like for Gibbs to receive that news about one of his team. It’s not easy news to deliver, no receive.

The underlying tension between Abby and Gibbs. It was so hard to see Abby as anything other than her usual effervescent self.

Not able to get over being annoyed by the fact that Hart insists on calling Gibbs “Mister Gibbs”, rather than “Agent Gibbs”.

Tony’s description of flan actually making me crave some.

The way they shot the scene in the interrogation room with Tony, Ziva and PO Borrows. I like how Tony was in the corner of the room and asked his first questions through the reflections in the glass. I think having Ziva sitting closer and Tony farther away was to make Burrows feel more comfortable when talking about something as awful as rape.

Abby trying to cover up the fact that she was hiding something in her conference call between Vance and Alejandro. Lying is so not her thing and it was hard for me to watch her try and do it.

Gibbs obviously starting to wonder about the reason for Mayc’s murder when he saw that her personal notes, including the ones dating back to her time as an MP and when she investigated him for the murder of Pedro, were possibly missing. Oh boy.

Gibbs making Tony chew and swallow on command. Boy, he’s got his team well trained, doesn’t he?

Knowing, like Gibbs did, that the reason those sailors beat that guy was because he raped the Petty Officer.

Loving the way Ziva described what she would do to a rapist.

Seeing a slightly more serious Tony when he ordered all the sailors out of their sleeping quarters, the way he and Ziva question them and especially loving the way Ziva told them to shut up. Awesome.

The tender and sweet way that Gibbs talked to the Petty Officer. I love how he can go from hardass to nice guy at the flip of a switch and knowing who needs which treatment.

Oh man, the moment that girl said that Tyler wasn’t alone I knew that his scumbag dad was in on it too.

Gibbs attempt at Spanish and really wanting to know what Rule 44 is.

Gibbs losing it and slamming the scumbag dad up against the glass, then realizing that Macy’s death had nothing to do with the rape.

Ducky figuring out what Gibbs did in Mexico and both of them connecting that murder to Macy’s and then Gibbs finally putting all the pieces together and coming up with one answer – Colonel Bell.

Gibbs cornering Hart and getting her tell him where Bell is now that he knows for sure that someone is after the people he cares about.

Abby instituting a lockdown on Gibbs and demanding to speak to him. Yes! Go Abs!

Abby saying that she is willing to do anything for Gibbs, including covering up everything about the murder. Wow. I never, ever thought Abby would say that. It just shows how much she cares for Gibbs, that’s she’s willing to do that for him.

Gibbs telling Abby that she has to send in the report, all of it, and Abby knowing that’s what he would say. Then the little kiss on her forehead – so sweet.

Vance asking Hart to stop being a lawyer and start being a friend and to tell him what Bell was up to. Awesome.

My heart going into my throat when I saw the burned house and the bodies on the beach. If something happens to Franks, his daughter in law and granddaughter (who is also Gibbs’ god-daughter), I don’t know what would happen to Gibbs. I don’t think he can take much more loss in his life and I was sickened when I thought they might be dead.

Being shocked to find out that the body was Colonel Bell and wondering who Dean was really working for. What an ending!!

Overall a good first part to the two-part season finale, leaving us with some answers but also a lot more questions, just as it should.
