Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: Hammer of the Gods

by on Apr.27, 2010, under Drama, Horror, Television

Richard Speight Jr in Supernatural Hammer of the Gods Loki Gabriel

Okay so this one is a little late and slightly shorter than normal because I (once again) had to go out of town for a few days, this time to watch a couple very good friends of mine get married.

Well first off I just have to say that this week’s episode was a bit of a surprise considering how the preview looked for it last week. When I saw the preview, I thought “oh no, a comedy episode?? After the drama of last week?? Really??” and wasn’t sure how well that was going to work.

Turns out someone over at the CW must have decided to mess with us fans a bit (or something) because the episode was actually nothing like the preview made it seem. It was every bit as serious as last week and continued the story arc nicely.

Sam and Dean end up in a hotel full of gods. Like literally, gods. They trap the boys there so that they can figure out a way to lure Lucifer there too and get rid of him and end the Apocalypse. Apparently they’re very annoyed with the whole thing and want it done and over with.

Joining the party is Loki (I love that name, probably because it sounds so much like my name – Moki, LOL), who is actually the archangel Gabriel who’s been hiding out as a Trickster. Confused? Yeah, me too for a little while. Loki/Gabriel knows that the other gods won’t be able to defeat his brother and tries to get Sam and Dean out of there before his brother arrives.

It doesn’t work and we end up with Gabriel and Lucifer going head to head. Kind of interesting to see those two face off since a Winchester face off is what has been hinted at all season. Sadly Gabriel is no match for his big bro, who takes him out without even breaking a sweat. He knew all of Gabriel’s trickster ways and wasn’t fooled by any of them.

Considering the fact that Gabriel has been killed almost as many times as Sam and Dean on the show, I really hoped he wasn’t gone this time. But when I saw him lying on the ground, the image of wings burned into the floor below him (the sign of an angel’s passing) I knew it was true and I was sad. I shall miss Loki/Gabriel. In the end though, he managed to give the boys some vital information about how to trap Lucifer, using the rings from the Four Horsemen.

Overall a somewhat sad episode that signaled an end to Gabriel/Loki.

I love Hammer Horror. Been a big fan since I was a kid. My bro and I loved the Dracula and Frankenstein movies. I highly recommend some of the more obscure vampire titles such as Vampire Circus, Twins of Evil, and Kiss of the Vampire. They are very enjoyable movies and shouldn’t be missed by Hammer fans even though they don’t star Cushing and Lee.
