TV Episode Recap/Review – The Walking Dead “Days Gone By”

by on Nov.01, 2010, under Drama, Horror

The Walking Dead “Days Gone By” – Season 1 Episode 1 – I was lucky enough to go to The Walking Dead panel at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego (CLICK HERE to read my coverage of the panel at Daemon’s TV). I had never heard of the comic book series but I was intrigued by the description in the program so I thought I’d check it out. The first thing they did was show us an extended preview of the show and right then and there I knew I was hooked. Just a few minutes of this show and I knew I was going to love it. Heck, I actually sought out the AMC booth on the vendor’s floor specifically so I could watch the preview over and over. Is that weird?

Sometimes a preview doesn’t live up to the hype and I was really, really hoping that wouldn’t be the case with The Walking Dead. But after the first scene, I knew I had nothing to worry about. It was even better than I expected. What I liked when I saw the preview was that I could see how this show was going to be about more than just the horror and gore. It’s taking a very horrific situation, one that’s been done to death (if you’ll pardon the pun) in tons of movies, and is adding a human touch to it by letting us see what this would do to people and how it effects them emotionally.

Rick isn’t a super hero, he is affected by what he sees and I couldn’t help but to put myself in his place. How would I deal with the news that the world had gone to hell while I slept, everyone I knew was gone and there were creatures that ate people running around? I think Rick took it really well. I probably would have been a drooling mess.

People close to the characters turning into zombies is nothing new but while in most movies they make it a joke or just blow them away, in this show we really see what it’s like when a zombie is someone you used to love – a mother, a wife, a friend. I never thought the sight of a zombie could do anything except make me scream, but there were scenes in this episode where I cried for them. That is something I didn’t expect at all.

Another thing I liked about this show was (continue reading…)

TV Episode Recap/Review – Supernatural “The Third Man”

by on Oct.18, 2010, under Drama, Horror

Hi folks! Here’s an excerpt from my review for Supernatural Season 6 Episode 3 “The Third Man”

CLICK HERE to read the entire review at Daemon’s TV.

My favorite bits..

Knowing Dean was really back when I saw him sleeping in the Impala again.

Okay, I gotta say it. How can I not put it on my list? Sam’s body. There. Need I say more? Really?

Dean telling Ben he knew he lying and to admit he broke the thing and take his punishment like a man. So in love with him acting like a father.

Dean calling Sam’s car a “plastic piece of crap”. Not sure I’d refer to a Charger that way, but then again all other vehicles pale in comparison to Dean’s baby.

This bit – Sam: “Were you just racing me?” Dean: “No.. I was kicking your ass.”

Covering my eyes so I didn’t have to see the locusts crawling out of the cop’s head. Ick!

Dean praying to Castiel to get his “feathery ass down here”.

Sam asking “he’s standing behind me, isn’t he?” – Okay so how many other NCIS fans immediately thought of Gibbs when he said that?

Cas saying that he and Dean share a “more profound bond”. Oh man, I think I just heard all the Dean/Cas fangirls squee with joy all at once.

Cas asking “what part of ‘I don’t know’ escapes your understanding?” – Whoa, badass Cass, very badass.

Cas saying that they could rule out Moses as a suspect.

Cas’ completely wrong use of “quotey fingers” as he tried to explain how his “people skills” were “rusty” after spending the last year as a multi-dimensional wavelength of celestial intent.

The argument over tracking the angel who took the boy’s soul – Dean is understandably disturbed at the idea of torturing a kid, Cas has to do it and can’t afford to care and Sam just wants to get the deed done.

The awesome shot they did by panning up from Cas getting up off of Sam’s completely totaled car to the boys standing in the window.

Dean pointing out the upside to Cas being thrown out a four story window… Sam’s car was destroyed. LOL.

Dean and Cas playing “Who’s on first?”. LOL!

Cas walking into a.. disco?

Agreeing with Cas, that was a really bad joke.

Balthazar telling Cas that he was following Cas’ footsteps, by rebelling the way he did when he stopped the fight between Lucifer and Michael.

Raphael showing up and kicking Cas’ ass literally all over the room. and even down some stairs. Poor Cas!

Balthazar saving the day by turning Raphael’s vessel to salt. Nice.

Cas saying “I believe the ‘hairless ape’ has the floor”.

Finally finding out why an angel would wants souls – for the power.

Sam finding Ben’s Halloween costume – a wendigo mask that Dean obviously made.

Dean pointing out that Sam is different after his trip to hell and Sam trying to say that he’s okay after his trip downstairs as it didn’t torture him the way it did Dean. Oh man, I so can’t wait to get that whole story.

My favorite bits…

Loving the opening scenes, Dean’s life before compared to Dean’s life now. They all made me so sad though.

Dean describing his previous job as pest control. LOL, well I guess that’s one way of putting it.

Dean telling his neighbor his gun was for killing possums.

The Impala was under a blanket??? NOOOO!!! Poor baby!

Totally freaking out when the ball came rolling from behind the car. I swear if there had been a ghost-child back there I was gonna scream my head off.

The return of YED made me jump pretty high but it was nothing compared to the squeal that came outta me when Sam showed up.

Yay! Another brother hug! It’s almost worth it each time one of them gets killed, because we always get great hugs after they are brought back to life.

Finding out that Sam has been back from hell for a year but didn’t want Dean to give up his regular life.

Samuel telling Dean to take a minute after all the resurrections he’d seen in one day. Yeah I’d be needing a minute, too. Maybe two or three actually.

Bobby assuming that if Dean was there, something was wrong. Dontcha just love how optimistic everyone is whenever they see each other? First Dean assumes he’s dead when he sees Sam and then Bobby assumes something’s wrong when he sees Dean. Okay yeah, except Bobby was right though.

Bobby saying that the tv was broken, but there were plenty of Reader’s Digests to read. LOL. Yeah that’s what every kid wants to hear.

Finding out that Bobby knew that Sam was alive, too. Oh, poor Dean.

Lisa calling Dean an idiot and telling him that she expected a guy who showed up at her door after basically saving the world to have a couple of issues. That was awesome.

Dean proving to his cousins that though he’s been out of the hunting game for a while, he still remembers a thing or two.

Kinda wanting to smack everyone around for going through Dean’s house and making fun of it. What, so they wanted him to live a normal life but all signs of that normal life are fodder for jokes? Um, make up your minds people!

Dean asking Sam if he wanted to talk about hell, because if anyone could relate, it was him.

Poor Dean having to see the image of Lisa burning on the ceiling and Ben drinking the YED’s blood. Yes it was just the djinn’s poison, but still.

Dean offering Sam the keys to the Impala because “she should be hunting”. Kinda surprised that Sam didn’t take her but also not, the Impala is his and he’s gonna need her when he does get back to hunting (cuz come on, we all know he will at some point).

Positively Positive Review – Ghostfacers: Webisodes 9 and 10

by on May.23, 2010, under Action, Comedy-drama, Horror, Webisodes

Ghostfacers webisodes CW

Episode 9 – I like how they did the “Then” and “Now” clips, which were very reminiscent of Supernatural. Pretty cool how this little web series gives us little clues to its origins. The hug between Harry and Maggie was very sweet. Poor Ed’s return from the hospital with Ambyr, covered in her blood, I wasn’t surprised that he wanted to pack it all in, who could blame him? This episode was pretty much completely serious, very different than the mood of the rest.

Episode 10 – Whoa, six weeks later and the Ghostfacers are disbanded? Everyone has moved on? Spruce is “LARP-ing” (aka Live Action Role Playing)?? Ed is making pizzas? Oh noes! But then Harry finds out that the theater is re-opening and gets Ed to realize that while one person may have been hurt, they also saved hundreds (if not thousands, LOL) of lives. And with that, they’re back! Woot!

Oh and they’re also looking for a new intern. Maybe they’ll end up losing one in each story, kinda like Kenny on South Park.

Overall the last two eps took us from fear and sadness all the way back to the fun and humor of the earlier eps. It was a fun roller coaster ride for me and I’m looking for the next season of this series.

Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: Swan Song

by on May.18, 2010, under Drama, Horror, Television

Supernatural Swan Song Sam Dean Lucifer

I have to apologize for this one being late. First off I had to watch this episode not once, not twice, but three whole times before I could wrap my head around it enough to even begin talking about it. Secondly I had a crazy busy weekend (yay to my friend who graduated law school and whose commencement, etc I attended) and finally, for some extra fun, my internet went down. Jeesh.

Like everyone out there, I had a lot of theories about how this season would end. None of them involved Dean living a normal life though. That one took me by surprise, even after he went to visit Lisa a couple episodes ago. When I thought of the possibility of Dean going off to live the apple pie life, it was always something I pictured as part of the series finale (that is, if he survived it of course).

This season ended with all of the characters basically going their separate ways, something that I found very interesting not just because usually at least some of them are together when a season ends, but also because none have any intention of being together. It makes me wonder how next season will start out and where it will go from there. What exactly will bring all of these characters together again now that they’ve all gone off to do different things?

I’m already excited about next season and it’s not even here yet. This is gonna be one long summer. Sigh.

Highlights….

The finale montage, as always, done to “Carry on Wayward Son” by Kansas. Somehow any other song just seems wrong for the season finale now.

Chuck writing the history of the Impala. I loved learning all about her, especially the bits that even Sam and Dean don’t know.

Dean calling Sam a “grown…..overgrown man” and saying that he has to stop treating Sam like a kid, a part of that being that Dean has to grow up too and go along with Sam’s plan to put the Lucifer back in his cage.

Noting that that was the quietest opening scene I think of any Supernatural episode. When the blood went across the screen with the title card, I practically jumped.

Dean’s “Aw, ain’t he a little angel” when he spotted Cas snoozing in the backseat. Then Sam pointing out that “angels don’t sleep” and both of them realizing the implications of what that meant. Cas appears to be heading towards the person he was in the ep ‘The End’ and, as much as I was enjoying his trip to humanity, I realized that I didn’t really want that particular end for him.

Sam asking Dean to let him rot in hell and to go live “some normal, apple pie life”. Oh man, I was not expecting that.

Bobby telling Sam to fight Lucifer and to keep swinging until the end.

Cas not realizing that part of a normal, tearful human goodbye (especially when things appeared as hopeless as they did) was to lie….and then trying to lie and failing miserably at it. Well at least he tried.

Sam asking Dean not to watch him drink the blood. Eep.

Learning about all the little things that the boys have done to the Impala over the years. Loved the little toy soldier in the ashtray. I bet my dad’s old car probably still has some toys stuck in it. Those kinds of ashtrays were awesome toy holders.

Lucifer remarking that Sam was “choc full of Ovaltine”

Lucifer asking Sam to “drop the telanovela”. LOL.

Lucifer quoting the famous “Devil Went Down to Georgia” by the Charlie Daniels Band. “A fiddle of gold against your soul says I’m better than you” is one of the best lines and that’s one of my favorite songs, like, ever. I used to sing it all the time when I was a kid. So awesome that they referenced it in the show.

Dean opening up the cage and having to force his brother to go inside. Yes of course it all turned out to be a trick and Lucifer was never going to step inside, but Dean didn’t know that and I can’t imagine how hard that was for him.

The way Jared played Lucifer, speaking softly and putting in little mannerisms that reminded me of Mark Pellegrino. The whole conversation in the mirror was brilliant.

Lucifer telling Sam that they were “MFEO” (which I had to look up to find out meant “made for each other”).

Finding out how many demons have been watching over Sam his whole life and Lucifer telling him that all those times he ran away, he was running towards him.

Dean calling Cas “Bukowski” (as in Charles Bukowski – my friend had to tell me he was a writer well known for drinking) oh and also calling him a “junkless sissy”.

Finding out that Sam and Dean did things like go to Ozzie concerts and Jayhawks games in the Impala. I also love that Chuck mentioned how they were never really homeless, because they always had the car. I said the exact same thing in my novel-length Supernatural fanfic (‘Black Cat’). Guess great minds think alike eh? Then again, I bet every fan has had the same thought, it’s just nice to actually hear it said on the show.

Dean telling Cas and Bobby that, even if all he was going to see was Michael killing Sam, he was still going to go there and not let his brother die alone. Oh my god, what a line.

Reading SOOO much into the conversation between Lucifer and Michael, and how it related to Sam and Dean. I still would have preferred Dean as Michael but it was still a fantastic scene and Adam (Jake Abel) did a great job.

Dean roaring up in the Impala and popping in a cassette of “Rock of Ages” by Def Leppard. Oh yeah baby!! Love that song. I think this one beats the ‘Renegade’ moment in the season 2 ep ‘Nightshifter’

Cas calling Michael “assbutt” and hitting him with a holy fire Molotov cocktail. That was awesome! Of course then it became less awesome when Lucifer snapped him into a bloody mess a few seconds after. EEEK!!

Not one minute after killing Cas, Lucifer snapping Bobby’s neck like it was nothing. Okay, seriously beginning to wonder if anyone was going to survive this episode.

Dean telling Sam, even as Lucifer was beating the living daylights out of him, that he wasn’t going to leave him. Oh my god….there are no words for what that did to me.

The montage of the boys ending in Dean hugging Sam, all of it happening after Sam spots the little toy soldier and manages to get a grip on Lucifer. Him telling Dean “it’s going to be okay Dean, I’ve got him” was another moment that just killed me.

Dean watching not only one brother have to dive into hell, but both of them, as Sam is forced to take Michael/Adam with him when Michael tries to stop him.

The friggin’ scary good job the makeup department did on Jensen’s face. I found myself unable to look at him, especially when he was sitting on the ground after everyone in the world he cared about had just been killed or sent to hell.

Cas returning??? New and improved!! Bringing back Bobby and healing Dean!! Holy cow!

Aw, so cute the way Dean asked if Cas was God.

Chuck’s comments about how hard endings are and that no matter how much you try “the fans are always gonna bitch”. LOL! Too true.

Cas pointing out to Dean that he actually got what he wanted since they never wanted the battle between Lucifer and Michael to happen on earth, taking out all of humanity with it no matter who won.

Dean fulfilling his promise and going off to live the life that Sam asked him to, even though everything in his being said to go find Sam. The way his voice broke when he told Lisa that he’d like to take her up on that offer of a beer practically broke my heart, as did the hug. I guess he does have someone now to turn to.

Chuck disappearing in a poof?? WTF? Okay so the moment that happened I jumped up and yelled “Chuck is God???!!” because it was the first thing that came to mind. After all, he knew everything that was going to happen and that little “poof” of his was different than the way we’ve seen any other creature disappear on the show so far. No matter what, he is something new, even if he’s not God himself. But for now, that’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

Sam watching Dean living his new life? Or was that Lucifer? WTF? Okay I gotta admit that one threw me, I so wasn’t expecting that and I have no idea what it means. Is Sam out? Is Lucifer coming for Dean?? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Overall an epic episode that is sending this series off in a whole new direction.
