TV Episode Review – The Good Guys: Broken Door Theory

The Good Guys Broken Door Theory

You know, I keep waiting for the humor in this show to get old but it just doesn’t. If anything, it’s getting funnier and funnier with each episode. I also keep waiting for Bradley Whitford’s performance as Dan to get annoying but nope, that’s not happening either. Still funny as hell and going strong, this week’s episode has the boys tracking down a candy thief. Of course, like with all their cases, it leads them to something much bigger and they end up after a no-good pimp who’s threatening a girl who just wants to get out of the biz once and for all.

My favorite bits…

Jack being more upset that Dan is about to sneeze on him than the fact that they’re both getting shot to hell in a bathtub.

Jack’s ex setting him up on a date

The thug telling his boss that his office is kind of a dump and he should get a decorator. Last week we got a sidekick spouting dating advice and now design advice? What’s next, a sidekick with cooking tips?

Gemini not willing to let his best girl go because he needs to get his tattoo removed. Must be a big problem among pimps everywhere.

Dan referring to the forensics techs as “the geeks with the microscopes”. LOL! You know, somehow I think Abby on NCIS would think that was pretty darn funny.

Dan trying to memorize the names on the computer before he saw that Jack had printed it out on the “mimeograph”.

The look between Dan and Jack when the hotel manager came flying off the roof. Classic.

The chase after the bad guys on the roof, done to the tune of ‘Solid Gold Easy Action’ by T. Rex.

Dan’s flu going from the hotel manager and making its way over to Gemini the pimp. That’s some pretty powerful germs he’s got there.

Barfing in the bushes turning out to be a good way to find evidence. Who knew?

Dan’s painful “It….will….pass” as he’s bent double and unable to move.

The angry wife threatening to gun down her husband to the tune of “These Boots Are Made For Walking”, originally by Nancy Sinatra but I’m pretty sure the version in this ep is from Star Academy.

Dan practically beside himself that he’s not the one who gets to entrap the call girl and Jack ending up only talking to her about his ex.

Great use of a punk version (which I could not find anywhere, unfortunately) of “My Boyfriend’s Back” during the scene where Gemini and his thug come to shoot up the hotel room.

Dan’s flu then making its way over to Lieutenant Ruiz and the simultaneous “she’s pissed” Dan and Jack say as she walks away, well, pissed.

Cracking up at my local news cutting into the episode to report on the earthquake that just happened and the episode resuming at the point where there’s a news report about the shooting. For a second there, I didn’t know what the heck was real…..well, except for the earthquake cuz I felt that. LOL.

Jack and Dan just happening to be at the pharmacy where Gemini shows up, exactly 1.01 miles from his house and therefore not breaking the ultimatum that the lieutenant gave them.

Dan’s “It’s not a toy…..it’s a red gun” when Gemini spots what he’s got in the mirror.

Another final action sequence to a great song ‘Traveling Band’ by Creedence.

Dan handcuffing himself to Gemini as he loses consciousness and then Jack fighting Gemini while the pimp is still attached to his partner. OMG, best fight ever!! LOL.

Jack telling Dan that he can’t punch the smug bastard in the face but letting him do the next best thing…..giving the guy a big ol’ wet kiss and the infamous flu.

Positively Positive Review – The Good Guys: Bait and Switch

The Good Guys Dan shoots computer from

Two episodes into this series and I’m totally hooked. I have no idea what kind of numbers this tv show is bringing in, but I really hope they’re good because ‘The Good Guys’ is already becoming a favorite.

Like the pilot, this episode was full of great lines, hilarious bad guys, gorgeous classic cars, awesome stunts and some totally rockin’ tunes. With all that good stuff, it’s hard to know what I like the most, but overall I’d have to say it’s the writing. Pretty much every single thing that comes out of every character’s mouth (especially Dan’s) cracks me up.

In this episode, the guys start out on a vandalism case and end up tracking down a whole lot of stolen classic cars. Not getting much help from the department they use Dan’s Trans Am as a bait car and (no surprise) they lose it. In the meantime, the sexy officer on the task force seems to have her sights set on Jack but it turns out that she’s working with the bad guys and trying to keep him off track.

My favorite bits….

Dan using Jack’s keyboard to scratch his back. Now there’s a use for one I hadn’t thought of before.

This line from Dan: “The only place a woman should punch a man is in the face.” – LOL!

Jack telling Dan “I’m not getting into a bed you’re already in, Dan.”

The bad guy’s sidekick actually spouting out some pretty good love advice.

Jack and Dan locking a snitch in the trunk so they can track Dan’s car. Brilliant and freaking hilarious.

Not being at all surprised that the moment Dan is left alone with a computer, he downloads enough porn to give it a virus.

That when the guys discover the computer isn’t tracking, Dan yells “my car!” and Jack yells “Julius!” – it’s not hard to who’s priorities are where.

Two sets of goofy bad guys – one silly but tough Brits and the other silly but tough rednecks.

Dan calling peanut shells “salty, delicious tree bark”

This bit:
Dan: “Hey man it don’t matter what her name is, you’re never gonna see her naked.”
(looks up and sees Kiersten standing behind him)
Dan: “I know I won’t”
(me falling on the floor and laughing my ass off)

Liz trying to hide the fact that she’s jealous about Jack going on a date with Kiersten, and failing miserably at it.

Kiersten and Jack battling it out to the tune of Heart’s ‘Crazy On You’. I was beginning to wonder at this point if we were going to get any music in this ep.

Dan nearly blowing away the “computer machine” because it wouldn’t tell him where his partner was.

FINALLY figuring out what in the heck the sound effect was that they use when flipping back and forth from scene to scene. When going from past to present they use the sounds of a revolver: spinning the cylinder and firing it. Then for just the regular scene changes they use an automatic: pulling back the slide and firing. Oh yes, I am extremely proud of myself for figuring this out. Can you tell?

Yelling at the screen “Noooo! Don’t hurt the cars!!” when Jack’s car came crashing through the window and hit the Mustang and then they started shooting it up. Oh noes!!

The final shootout done to the tune of “Rock You Like a Hurricane” by Scorpions….and laughing out loud at the fact that both of the songs used in the ep are actually in my iPod shuffle right now and I worked out to at least one of them in the past week.

Jack turning down Liz so he could go take part in Dan’s tradition of eating oysters and drinking beer till they puke. Awwww, so sweet.

Overall another fun episode of this great new series.

Positively Positive Review – Lie To Me: Beat The Devil

by on Jun.08, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

Lie To Me picture image Beat The Devil

Well after what felt like the longest hiatus ever, a brand new Lie To Me finally came on the air last night and boy was I happy to see it return.

In this episode, Cal once again goes up against a raging lunatic. The problem this time is that no one believes him. He finds the man not during a case given to him by the FBI, but while simply doing a lecture for an old friend. A student in the class appears to get the upper hand on Cal but really all he’s done is expose himself for what he is, a murderer. From then on, Cal never lets up until finally he finds himself at the business end of the other man’s psychosis and uses nothing but his mind to get out of it.

Right before posting this review, I looked up the actor who played the psychopath (Martin) and discovered it was Jason Dohring from Moonlight. I never saw that show but after watching his performance in this episode, I think I may have to rent it. The funniest part though was realizing that I used to teach his younger siblings horseback riding back when I worked as a riding instructor. Small world. LOL.

My favorite bits…

Knowing as soon as I saw the headlights on the car that it would turn out to be a guy bringing a woman to the woods to bury her and wondering what that says about me. Maybe I watch a little too much tv.

Also knowing the moment the guy in the class contradicted Lightman that he was the guy driving the car. I never doubted it for a second.

Getting a shiver when Lightman pointed out that the guy couldn’t like whatever was in the picture and it turned out to be the cute girl as described. Then the guy liking the picture of the man tied to a chair. Creeeepy!!

As always, really digging the intro done to ‘Brand New Day’ by Ryan Star. It just never gets old.

Lightman telling the Principal that he was doing to do “sod all” (British phrase that basically means “nothing”). Man I love it when he talks all British like that.

“One should not shag one’s students. Especially the psycho ones.” – LOL, great line.

The appearance of Howard Hesseman as a teacher who’s sure he saw a UFO. I have always loved this guy and not just because he totally reminds me of my uncle.

The way Cal was so sure about Martin and the two of them playing cat and mouse – Call following Martin and Martin showing up at Cal’s office, etc.

Helen warning Gillian that Cal isn’t one for the “long haul”. Aw, that was pretty sad.

Eli spotting that the kid knew something about the UFO’s and getting the truth out of him about what he saw.

Not being able to hold back a laugh when I saw who was playing Martin’s mother. Lee Garlington played a mother of a psycho son on NCIS too, a mother who was also a psycho herself.

The way the mother apologized to her son making me think that she knew about what he did and was scared of him.

Freaking out when Martin found Ria in the coffee shop and she fell for his act. Eek!

Seeing how shook up Ria was after realizing who Martin was. I almost thought she was going to defend him because he didn’t hurt her, but apparently she read him and knew he was lying. Whew.

Finding out just how sick Martin was – waterboarding girls and then bringing them back to do it again and agin. Oh man that is…unreal.

Cal finally getting through to Martin and making him break when he brought up his relationship with Helen. Nice.

Jumping when Martin lost control in Helen’s office and then seeing Cal come out of the other room and knowing it was all a set up. Oh man, so scary.

Completely, totally and utterly losing it when Martin got hold of Cal and put him through the torture he did to the girls. I never, ever thought that would happen. I was prepared for Martin to go after Ria or Helen, or even Gillian, but Cal himself? That blew me away.

Even after being kidnapped, tortured and quite literally killed (multiple times), Cal still manages to stay in control and gets the story out of Martin. Why he let his sister and even spotting where the bodies were buried. Damn, that man is good.

Cal asking Gillian to catch a bite and watching the wheels turn in her head as she remembered what Helen said about him. I thought the two of them were only friends but if she turned him down, I wonder if that means she’s starting to think of him as more than that.

Overall a nail bitingly exciting episode.

Positively Positive Review – The Good Guys: Pilot

by on May.20, 2010, under Action, Comedy-drama, Crime, Television

The Good Guys Pilot Dan Jack

When I sit down to watch a brand new series, there’s a few things I look for to determine if I think it will be something I’ll continue to watch. Things like whether or not I care for the characters? Or does it make me feel any strong emotions (in other words, does it make me laugh or cry)?

By the second commercial break, I already knew that I was hooked – because by that time I had already laughed out loud at least 3 or 4 different times.

But it wasn’t just the humor that got to me, there was plenty more to like than just that. First off there’s the superb performances from Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as Dan and Jack, partners who couldn’t be more opposites if they tried. Dan lives every day like it was still “the good old days”, back when he was a beat cop that didn’t have to play by any rules, while Jack is about nothing but rules. They work differently, talk differently and dress differently. They shouldn’t get along but somehow they do.

Then there’s the fact that hidden under all the broad comedy, there’s a little bit of heart too. Dan storming out of the bar after he finds out that no one wants him on a case he busted his ass on, was almost touching.

Finally there’s the music. How can I not like a show that plays songs like ‘I Fought The Law’ by The Clash, ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC and ‘The Stroke’ by Billy Squire? The fact that they featured ‘Slow Ride’ by Foghat in the preview clips for the upcoming season makes me very hopeful that we’ll continue to hear some great tunes on this show.

Oh and then there’s the car too. I’m not sure if a Trans Am will always make an appearance on the show, but I sure loved seeing it in this ep.

Oh and also the action. Car chases, crazy stunts with guys jumping onto moving cars and from moving cars into other moving cars, a Mexican standoff, trucks flipping over. So much fun!

Overall a strong showing from this brand new series which has me looking forward to more.

Positively Positive Review – Bones: The Witch In The Wardrobe

Bones The Witch In The Wardrobe Hodgins and Angela in jail

Ever since Angela and Hodgins broke off their engagement, I’ve been secretly hoping that they’d get back together. I never really understood what happened with them so when they started to patch things up recently, I wondered if my wish was going to come true.

In this episode, Bones and Booth are tracking down a really unusual case involving good witches, bad witches, old witches (like, really old, from the 1600’s) and new witches (aka Wiccans). In the midst of it all, Angela and Hodgins end up in a small town jail for outstanding warrants that they both have, giving them some time alone.

Like I said, I never really understood what happened between those two and as they started talking, it turns out they didn’t really know either. Going over the last conversation they had as a couple, they realize that they both simply got scared and ran away from true happiness. I cheered out loud when they kissed and was downright shocked when the judge showed up and they finally got married. YAY!!!!

I’m so happy to see these characters together and I can’t wait to see how the show deals with them as a married couple working together doing the job that they do. I’m sure it will be very interesting.

Overall a really sweet episode.
