Positively Positive Review – Bones: The Parts in the Sum of the Whole

Bones The Parts in the Sum of the Whole

Oh man, I have so much love for this episode I truly don’t know where to begin. First off we get to see how Booth and Bones actually met. Not only that, but we get to see the entire crew coming together for the first time as a team.

I loved that Hodgins used to be an angry little man who (according to Zack), needed to “get laid”. I also loved watching the first ever Hodgins/Zack experiment and knowing how their friendship built itself from there.

I loved that Caroline was just as wonderful back then as she is now.

I loved that Angela was a starving artist drawing caricatures in the park and dreaming of going to Paris when Brennan brought her on to the team.

I loved watching Sweets slowly go into full-on panic mode as he heard their story and realized that all the work he’d put into his book was for nothing.

I loved that Booth and Bones made no (pardon the pun) bones about the fact that they were attracted to each other right off the bat. Even going so far as to make out a little bit and very nearly sleeping together.

But most of all I am completely and utterly in love with the fact that the show FINALLY approached the whole subject of Booth being in love (and knowing it) with Brennan. I was on pins and needles waiting for Booth to do exactly as he did in the very end, realize that he was the gambler and needed to take a chance. I cried along with Bones when she had to let him down, telling him that he was the one who needed protecting – from a person like her.

Right now I really can’t think of a better way for the show to have handled this. Obviously if we were looking at the final episode of the series, I’d say yes let’s have them together. But right now? Heck no! We need these two to be dependent upon each other, and yet not actually able to take it to the next level. We need the awkwardness and drama that’s surely to come when Booth does find someone else (as he said he needs to). We need all of that to make the remainder of the series as awesome as it has been so far.

Overall a great episode on so many levels, not just for the fun of the flashbacks but also for the ending and where it will take the characters from here.
