Positively Positive Review – Bones: The Witch In The Wardrobe

Bones The Witch In The Wardrobe Hodgins and Angela in jail

Ever since Angela and Hodgins broke off their engagement, I’ve been secretly hoping that they’d get back together. I never really understood what happened with them so when they started to patch things up recently, I wondered if my wish was going to come true.

In this episode, Bones and Booth are tracking down a really unusual case involving good witches, bad witches, old witches (like, really old, from the 1600’s) and new witches (aka Wiccans). In the midst of it all, Angela and Hodgins end up in a small town jail for outstanding warrants that they both have, giving them some time alone.

Like I said, I never really understood what happened between those two and as they started talking, it turns out they didn’t really know either. Going over the last conversation they had as a couple, they realize that they both simply got scared and ran away from true happiness. I cheered out loud when they kissed and was downright shocked when the judge showed up and they finally got married. YAY!!!!

I’m so happy to see these characters together and I can’t wait to see how the show deals with them as a married couple working together doing the job that they do. I’m sure it will be very interesting.

Overall a really sweet episode.

Positively Positive Review – Bones: The Rocker In The Rinse Cycle

Bones The Rocker In the Rinse Cycle

This week’s episode of Bones was, well, rockin’. Pretty appropriate considering it was part of “Fox Rocks Week”. I didn’t see any of the other shows in the rockin’ (yes, I love that word, can you tell?) lineup but if they were anything like Bones then I’m sure they were a fun watch.

Booth and Bones end up at a rock ’n’ roll fantasy camp after one of the campers ends up dead and in a industrial washing machine. At one point they even get to belt out ‘their’ song – ‘Hot Blooded’ by Foreigner. Turns out that Bones plays a pretty mean guitar and Booth not only has some moves but doesn’t sing too badly. I love that Bones hesitated to play the song at first because the last time they did, someone tried to kill them. Leave it to her to remember a little detail like that.

The rest of the squints had their own stories behind the scenes as always. Hodgins and Vaziri find out that they both share a love of baseball and proceed to use every reference to the game they can as they both uncover clues as to what happened to the hapless rock camper.

Meanwhile Camille has her own interesting little situation to deal with. She finds a gynecologist for her teenage daughter and soon discovers that they are attracted to each other. Thankfully her daughter finds out before things got too awkward, and rightfully asks for a new doctor. Thank goodness, because I couldn’t even imagine how strange that arrangement would have been. Now Camille can date the man, which is cool because I actually think he’s a pretty sweet character. Will be interesting to see if he comes back on the show.

Overall a fun and rockin’ (see? I couldn’t resist) episode.

Positively Positive Review – Bones: The Parts in the Sum of the Whole

Bones The Parts in the Sum of the Whole

Oh man, I have so much love for this episode I truly don’t know where to begin. First off we get to see how Booth and Bones actually met. Not only that, but we get to see the entire crew coming together for the first time as a team.

I loved that Hodgins used to be an angry little man who (according to Zack), needed to “get laid”. I also loved watching the first ever Hodgins/Zack experiment and knowing how their friendship built itself from there.

I loved that Caroline was just as wonderful back then as she is now.

I loved that Angela was a starving artist drawing caricatures in the park and dreaming of going to Paris when Brennan brought her on to the team.

I loved watching Sweets slowly go into full-on panic mode as he heard their story and realized that all the work he’d put into his book was for nothing.

I loved that Booth and Bones made no (pardon the pun) bones about the fact that they were attracted to each other right off the bat. Even going so far as to make out a little bit and very nearly sleeping together.

But most of all I am completely and utterly in love with the fact that the show FINALLY approached the whole subject of Booth being in love (and knowing it) with Brennan. I was on pins and needles waiting for Booth to do exactly as he did in the very end, realize that he was the gambler and needed to take a chance. I cried along with Bones when she had to let him down, telling him that he was the one who needed protecting – from a person like her.

Right now I really can’t think of a better way for the show to have handled this. Obviously if we were looking at the final episode of the series, I’d say yes let’s have them together. But right now? Heck no! We need these two to be dependent upon each other, and yet not actually able to take it to the next level. We need the awkwardness and drama that’s surely to come when Booth does find someone else (as he said he needs to). We need all of that to make the remainder of the series as awesome as it has been so far.

Overall a great episode on so many levels, not just for the fun of the flashbacks but also for the ending and where it will take the characters from here.

Positively Positive Review – Bones: The Devil In The Details

Bones Devil In the Details

There was a lot in this episode that I liked. First off, being a huge fan of Supernatural, I really couldn’t help but to giggle at all the references to the….well, supernatural. Every mention of demons, Lucifer, fallen angles, Uriel, etc, all had me cracking up. For a while there I was confused as to just exactly which show I was watching.

I liked some of the more humorous moments they scattered throughout it as well, from everyone referring to the body as “Hellboy” at first, to Hodgins accidentally knocking himself out with the nunchucks.

In the end, what I liked most about this episode was the fact that it brought everything back to faith and showed us how differently some characters dealt with it. Booth has faith in God and so does Vaziri, though they each call Him by another name. I was surprised to find that Bones has faith too and never would I have believed that I’d find math and science so beautiful. But to hear her describe how “two plus two equals four” and “the sun rises because the Earth moves” – I suddenly saw the beauty. And by doing so, I also understood her a little better than I did before.

Overall an episode that taught me a lot about faith and tolerance, while still being a lot of fun.

Positively Positive Review – Bones: The Dentist In The Ditch

by on Jan.29, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz in Bones, season 5, episode 13 “The Dentist In The Ditch”. Bones The Dentist In The Ditch

This episode was interesting as it took a look at some stereotypes and blew them out of the water. While investigating the murder of a dentist, Booth and Bones think they are dealing with a possible hate crime as the man is gay. They come to find out that he played football and think it was a teammate, then an opposing team member. In the end it turned out that he was killed over some paving stones, and yet not, as their fight ultimately came down to hatred as well. I liked this storyline as it really kept me thinking and wondering exactly what would be at the bottom of the murder.

The secondary storyline focused on Booth and his brother. In this show, Booth follows his heart and gut through each episode while Bones sticks with the science. It works well on a case but Booth’s gut isn’t always right, as in the case of his brother’s new fiancé. I felt for Booth because I know he was just trying to look out for his brother by running a background check. But it was Bones’ unfailing logic (pointing out that it was Booth himself that made her reconcile with her own father) that finally showed him the error of his ways and come to accept the woman destined to become his sister in law.

Finally, I also loved the montage of Bones looking over the body, done to the tune of “Where Is The Middle” by The Bird and The Bee (song info thanks to heardontv.com). So many times these montages are done to sad songs, often showing sad activities, but this time it was really upbeat. It felt like we were on the hunt with Bones to figure out exactly what happened to the dentist.

Overall a great episode that kept me wondering where it would end up.
