Positively Positive Review – Chuck: Chuck Versus The Ring Part II

by on May.25, 2010, under Action, Comedy-drama, Spy, Television

Chuck vs the Ring Part II Chuck and Ellie

If someone had told me three years ago that our friendly, geeky, lovable Nerd Herder would be a super-spy, I wouldn’t have believed it. In fact, if I’d been told about any of the huge changes to these characters and the show, I wouldn’t have believed that either. Sarah and Chuck in love, a somewhat kinder Casey also a loving father, Morgan a part of the spy team, Devon and Ellie not only aware that Chuck is a spy, but helping Chuck to defeat the Ring??

Nope, no way, never would have believed any of it.

But that’s exactly where we are and as surprised as I am by all of it, I gotta say that I’m also loving it. I mean really, how long could Chuck stick with being just the lovable geek? This new and improved Chuck is much better, and quite a bit hotter, I might add. All of the characters are moving on and having their own adventures, making for a much more interesting show these days.

None of which more so than the last episode of this season. Wow. I mean really, wow. What a ride. I was laughing, I was cheering, I was crying – it was fantastic. Chuck, with the help of pretty much everyone he knows, finally defeats the Ring and in the process, decides to give up the spy game.

Yeah right, like any of us were buying the old “I quit once this assignment is over” line.

Much as I suspected, in the end Chuck discovers something so big that I’m sure he’ll be forced to get back into the spy game. His mother appears to be alive!! Whoa.

Overall a really fun roller coaster ride for the final two episodes of this season that has me eagerly awaiting the next.

Positively Positive Review – Ghostfacers: Webisodes 9 and 10

by on May.23, 2010, under Action, Comedy-drama, Horror, Webisodes

Ghostfacers webisodes CW

Episode 9 – I like how they did the “Then” and “Now” clips, which were very reminiscent of Supernatural. Pretty cool how this little web series gives us little clues to its origins. The hug between Harry and Maggie was very sweet. Poor Ed’s return from the hospital with Ambyr, covered in her blood, I wasn’t surprised that he wanted to pack it all in, who could blame him? This episode was pretty much completely serious, very different than the mood of the rest.

Episode 10 – Whoa, six weeks later and the Ghostfacers are disbanded? Everyone has moved on? Spruce is “LARP-ing” (aka Live Action Role Playing)?? Ed is making pizzas? Oh noes! But then Harry finds out that the theater is re-opening and gets Ed to realize that while one person may have been hurt, they also saved hundreds (if not thousands, LOL) of lives. And with that, they’re back! Woot!

Oh and they’re also looking for a new intern. Maybe they’ll end up losing one in each story, kinda like Kenny on South Park.

Overall the last two eps took us from fear and sadness all the way back to the fun and humor of the earlier eps. It was a fun roller coaster ride for me and I’m looking for the next season of this series.

Positively Positive Review – The Good Guys: Pilot

by on May.20, 2010, under Action, Comedy-drama, Crime, Television

The Good Guys Pilot Dan Jack

When I sit down to watch a brand new series, there’s a few things I look for to determine if I think it will be something I’ll continue to watch. Things like whether or not I care for the characters? Or does it make me feel any strong emotions (in other words, does it make me laugh or cry)?

By the second commercial break, I already knew that I was hooked – because by that time I had already laughed out loud at least 3 or 4 different times.

But it wasn’t just the humor that got to me, there was plenty more to like than just that. First off there’s the superb performances from Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as Dan and Jack, partners who couldn’t be more opposites if they tried. Dan lives every day like it was still “the good old days”, back when he was a beat cop that didn’t have to play by any rules, while Jack is about nothing but rules. They work differently, talk differently and dress differently. They shouldn’t get along but somehow they do.

Then there’s the fact that hidden under all the broad comedy, there’s a little bit of heart too. Dan storming out of the bar after he finds out that no one wants him on a case he busted his ass on, was almost touching.

Finally there’s the music. How can I not like a show that plays songs like ‘I Fought The Law’ by The Clash, ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC and ‘The Stroke’ by Billy Squire? The fact that they featured ‘Slow Ride’ by Foghat in the preview clips for the upcoming season makes me very hopeful that we’ll continue to hear some great tunes on this show.

Oh and then there’s the car too. I’m not sure if a Trans Am will always make an appearance on the show, but I sure loved seeing it in this ep.

Oh and also the action. Car chases, crazy stunts with guys jumping onto moving cars and from moving cars into other moving cars, a Mexican standoff, trucks flipping over. So much fun!

Overall a strong showing from this brand new series which has me looking forward to more.

Positively Positive Review – Human Target: Christopher Chance

by on Apr.15, 2010, under Action, Drama, Television

Human Target Lee Majors Mark Valley Christopher Chance

I was out of town for over a month and missed a lot of this show recently. So I watched the last six episodes in a mini marathon over the past two days, culminating in last night’s season finale.

All I have to say is wow.

Okay so that’s not all I have to say. If it was this would be one heck of a short review. So actually I have a lot more to say.

First off can we talk about the guest stars they have on this show? Every episode has me scrambling to IMDb to figure out why I recognize the baddie or damsel in distress. Then I find out it’s because nearly all of them have done guest spots on some of my other favorite shows like NCIS, Supernatural, Burn Notice, Angel and more. This episode was no different, starring none other than the likes of Armand Assante (who I loved as “The Frog” in NCIS), Lee Majors (c’mon, who doesn’t know the “Six Million Dollar Man”?), Amy Acker (wonderful in Angel) and Timothy Omundson (from Psych).

After the amazing guest stars, my next favorite part of the episode was the fact that it finally gave us some more background into who Christopher Chance is, who the mysterious “Katherine” was and why he does what he does. I loved finding out how he met and began working with his little team and wasn’t surprised at all to find out that Winston used to be a cop, though I was a bit surprised to find out that Guerrero used to work for “Daddy” as well.

But as much as we learned about Chance, the less we actually know about him. Turns out he’s spent the last six years building a life, and yet not a lot of it really is. His home used to belong to the man whose name he also took. Because, much like “Dread Pirate Roberts”, Chance’s name is one that is passed down from bodyguard to bodyguard. Even Chance’s dog is not his, originally belonging to the woman he loved.

The end of the episode left us with a cliffhanger as Winston is taken away by Chris’ former boss and now he must go back to the man he once considered a father to get his friend back. I will be waiting on pins and needles until then, happy that the show went away from its “everything wrapped in a neat little package by the end credits” format for its season finale.

Overall an episode that answered a lot of questions and asked a lot of questions, leaving this viewer wanting more.

Positively Positive Review – Human Target: Sanctuary

by on Feb.04, 2010, under Action, Comedy, Drama, Television

Human Target Sanctuary

Okay so after seeing three episodes of this show, I finally came to a decision about it last week.

I love it.

In some ways, I’m surprised by that. This show is kinda corny in some parts, overly dramatic in others and likes to put in a lot of one-liners. All of which should have put me off and truth be told, in the beginning, it kinda did.

When I first heard about Human Target, I had no idea it was based on a comic book. From the ads I saw it looked like it would be full of action and maybe some drama. So the overly dramatic music, one-liners and general corny-ness put me off. But the more I watched it, the more I liked it and once I found out it was based on a comic, it all made a lot more sense.

Also when I watch it, for some strange reason, I can’t help but to be reminded of that great 80’s ball of cheese that I adored – MacGyver. It’s got the handsome hero always trying to save the damsel (or dude) in distress. It’s got the older, crankier sidekick guy who works mostly in the background and handles all the mundane stuff. It’s got a wacky sidekick who’s full of mystery. Plus it’s got the music. Like I said, at first I didn’t like it, but now the music has totally grown on me and become one of my favorite parts of the show.

Plus, last night’s episode featured a fight in a gondola and featured one of the best Wilhelm Scream’s I’ve ever heard – what’s not to like?

Overall a fun tv show full of action, some comedy, damsels and dames in distress, a handsome hero and of course that really, really dramatic music.
