Positively Positive Review – Bones: The Dentist In The Ditch

by on Jan.29, 2010, under Crime, Drama, Television

Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz in Bones, season 5, episode 13 “The Dentist In The Ditch”. Bones The Dentist In The Ditch

This episode was interesting as it took a look at some stereotypes and blew them out of the water. While investigating the murder of a dentist, Booth and Bones think they are dealing with a possible hate crime as the man is gay. They come to find out that he played football and think it was a teammate, then an opposing team member. In the end it turned out that he was killed over some paving stones, and yet not, as their fight ultimately came down to hatred as well. I liked this storyline as it really kept me thinking and wondering exactly what would be at the bottom of the murder.

The secondary storyline focused on Booth and his brother. In this show, Booth follows his heart and gut through each episode while Bones sticks with the science. It works well on a case but Booth’s gut isn’t always right, as in the case of his brother’s new fiancé. I felt for Booth because I know he was just trying to look out for his brother by running a background check. But it was Bones’ unfailing logic (pointing out that it was Booth himself that made her reconcile with her own father) that finally showed him the error of his ways and come to accept the woman destined to become his sister in law.

Finally, I also loved the montage of Bones looking over the body, done to the tune of “Where Is The Middle” by The Bird and The Bee (song info thanks to heardontv.com). So many times these montages are done to sad songs, often showing sad activities, but this time it was really upbeat. It felt like we were on the hunt with Bones to figure out exactly what happened to the dentist.

Overall a great episode that kept me wondering where it would end up.

Positively Positive Review – Lie To Me: Tractor Man

There were so many great things in this episode; I hardly know where to begin. I guess I’ll start with the cast. In addition to the already wonderful regulars, we also got Miguel Ferrer as FBI Agent Steele (aka Agent Reynolds’ boss) and Felicia Day as a schoolteacher.

I’ve been a fan of Miguel’s for years and was so happy when I saw he was in this episode. I love seeing great actors on screen together and I was absolutely giddy over Miguel acting alongside Tim. Miguel’s character was not a bad guy, but in his fight to ensure that no one was hurt by a crazed bomber, he and Lightman go head to head on a few issues.

As for Felicia, I of course loved her in Dr. Horrible and when I saw her come on screen, I quite literally squealed out loud. Yes I’m that easy to please. She played the part of a scared schoolteacher looking out for her students very well. Getting to hear her sing again was a special treat. I had no idea that Brendan Hines could sing or play guitar and that little song they did together was so cute and catchy, I found that I couldn’t resist singing along either.

You can catch a clip of the song “White Lie” here.

Overall a riveting yet fun episode, with some great guest stars and some musical moments, the latter of which I’d never thought to see on this series.

Positively Positive Review – Dollhouse: A Love Supreme

by on Dec.14, 2009, under Drama, Sci Fi, Television

Alan Tudyk in Dollhouse, season 2, episode 8 “A Love Supreme”. Image from www.daemonstv.comAlan Tudyk looking snappy in Dollhouse: A Love Supreme

You know, ever since I heard that Dollhouse was going to be cancelled, I told myself I wasn’t going to do any more reviews. In fact, I wasn’t even sure if I was going to watch it. After all, why get myself excited over a show that soon enough won’t exist?

Well as you can see, I’ve decided to do both. Once again, I simply can’t help it. I started this blog so that I could talk about the things I love about good tv shows out there, and Dollhouse is still one of those shows.

Not only is this show good, but in the past few weeks it’s gotten phenomenal. Just my luck that I’m beginning to love a show more and more, now that its head is firmly placed on the chopping block.

Oh well, I’m a fan of Joss Whedon. Getting my heart broken is part of the territory, right?

Fox is now showing two eps every week, I’m sure so that they can get it off their roster faster. Sigh. I’m only going to talk about the last one though. The one that had me literally squealing in delight, laughing hysterically and nearly in tears? Yeah, that’s the one.

It’s not just the return of Alpha that’s making this show so good. Though I’ll admit, as a huge Alan Tudyk fan, that is a big part of it. But it’s also the fact that Echo is more than just a mere “doll” now. She’s gained the ability to pick and choose her personas at will, whenever one suits her needs. Plus she and Ballard didn’t sleep together and just like Alpha, I totally knew that meant he loved her and she him.

So now we have the characters all going in new directions and poof! here’s Alpha to screw it all up royally. Implanting himself with Ballard (and causing his “brain death” in the process) is the latest trick up his sleeve.

I can’t wait until next week, when we get another two hours to see what happens next and how Echo is going to fix it……because she has to fix it, right???

Positively Positive Review – Bones: The Gamer In The Grease

by on Dec.07, 2009, under Crime, Drama, Television

This episode featured a major appearance from a major motion picture about to be released called, Avatar. Yes, the way they did it was a little heavy handed but it still provided a bit of humor as Sweets, Colin and Hodgins not only got tickets but spent the entire episode taking turns standing in line for it. In the end, Colin missed it, but somehow I don’t think he minded.

I enjoyed the camaraderie of the guys and am finally beginning to miss Zach less. Hodgins and he made a good pair but with Sweets and now Colin around, I feel like we are getting some of that dynamic back.

Plus, we got to see Hodgins all sweated up and in a wifebeater t-shirt. What red-blooded, straight female wouldn’t appreciate that?

Bones and Booth are still dancing around their issues but since I’m not ready for them to actually become a couple anytime soon, I was perfectly content with the dance. The ending wasn’t a huge surprise but it did allow another great musical moment and gave a bit of heart, something I always appreciate.

Positively Positive Review – Lie To Me: Secret Santa

by on Nov.24, 2009, under Crime, Drama, Television

Tim Roth in Lie To Me, season 2, episode 8 “Secret Santa”. Image from www.daemonstv.comLie To Me Secret Santa

In this week’s episode of Lie To Me, the show manages to have lots of humor, Christmas cheer, and a good dose of action. Lightman is sent to Afghanistan to find out if a man claiming to be US military so deep undercover that he’s been acting as a Taliban, is actually telling the truth.

Meanwhile, back at home his daughter is clueless as to his whereabouts. Everyone, including her father, decided that it would be best that she did not know. At first I thought it was cruel to keep her out of the loop, but when she walked in at one point and saw what was happening, I changed my mind. There are many people out there right now risking their lives for our country. The difference is that none of their families actually have to watch the horror that goes with it. Like Lightman said when he came back, safe and sound, and hugged her tightly – she should never have seen that.

Once again since I’m new to the series, I’m unsure if some of the information we were given in this episode was new or introduced already. Either way, I was surprised to hear that Lightman once worked for English Intelligence. Then again, it’s not really all that surprising, given his unique skills.

Everything that happened in Afghanistan was intense and I enjoyed Lightman digging deeper and deeper into the man to find out the real truth – even as the man dug deeper into Lightman. The two of them played well off of each other and it was a great way to give us some more tidbits into Lightman’s past.

Overall another excellent episode, going from humorous to intense and then to heartwarming, and all in about 40 minutes.
