Positively Positive Review – The Good Guys: Pilot

The Good Guys Pilot Dan Jack

When I sit down to watch a brand new series, there’s a few things I look for to determine if I think it will be something I’ll continue to watch. Things like whether or not I care for the characters? Or does it make me feel any strong emotions (in other words, does it make me laugh or cry)?

By the second commercial break, I already knew that I was hooked – because by that time I had already laughed out loud at least 3 or 4 different times.

But it wasn’t just the humor that got to me, there was plenty more to like than just that. First off there’s the superb performances from Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as Dan and Jack, partners who couldn’t be more opposites if they tried. Dan lives every day like it was still “the good old days”, back when he was a beat cop that didn’t have to play by any rules, while Jack is about nothing but rules. They work differently, talk differently and dress differently. They shouldn’t get along but somehow they do.

Then there’s the fact that hidden under all the broad comedy, there’s a little bit of heart too. Dan storming out of the bar after he finds out that no one wants him on a case he busted his ass on, was almost touching.

Finally there’s the music. How can I not like a show that plays songs like ‘I Fought The Law’ by The Clash, ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC and ‘The Stroke’ by Billy Squire? The fact that they featured ‘Slow Ride’ by Foghat in the preview clips for the upcoming season makes me very hopeful that we’ll continue to hear some great tunes on this show.

Oh and then there’s the car too. I’m not sure if a Trans Am will always make an appearance on the show, but I sure loved seeing it in this ep.

Oh and also the action. Car chases, crazy stunts with guys jumping onto moving cars and from moving cars into other moving cars, a Mexican standoff, trucks flipping over. So much fun!

Overall a strong showing from this brand new series which has me looking forward to more.
