Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: Good God, Y’All

The second episode of this season brought back a few familiar faces from seasons past and I was very happy to see them. Makes me wonder if they’ll continue to bring back more characters from previous seasons and also if we’ll see more of the ones we’ve already seen.

A highly tense episode with lots of action and a good amount of angst thrown in for good measure, this one had everything that makes Supernatural the great show that it is.

Highlights….

Once again a great song in the opening montage – “Long, Long Way from Home”  by Foreigner.

Cas calling on the cell phone was hilarious. Hadn’t thought about how he wouldn’t be able to find the guys either, now that he’s marked them with a sigil.

Loved seeing the sigil on the x-ray. Too rad.

Whoa. Cas is going to find God?

Cas getting all up in Dean’s face, telling him that he sacrificed everything for them. Love it when he gets all tough like that.

Ha! I knew it! I knew it! I knew it! *does a happy dance* I’ve been saying since last season that the amulet Sam gave Dean was going to play a big part one of these days. So when Cas said it would help him find God I actually cheered out loud.

Interesting that Dean seems so attached to the amulet. Considering he and Sam aren’t on the best of terms right now I have to wonder what significance it has for him exactly.

Another great song! Too funny that I had literally just been listening to “Spirit in the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum a few hours before the ep aired. Oh how I love it when they use songs I already have on my iPod. Makes adding them to my own Supernatural Soundtrack that much easier. (thanks to www.heardontv.com for help with the info on both songs from this ep).

Dean eyeing the red Mustang. Yep, I totally would’ve noticed it too. That was a hot car.

OMG! It’s Ellen! Hi Ellen! Damn, I missed her. Love that the first thing she did was throw holy water in Dean’s face. Some things never change.

Love that Ellen is one of the few people that can make both Dean and Sam shake in their boots, despite being about half their size.

The tension building between Sam and Dean. Wow, you can cut it with a knife. Yes I know that’s cliché but hey, it’s the truth.

The fact that if you watch carefully when Sam kills the “demons” in the store, they don’t flash when he stabs them with the knife. When I saw that I pointed it out to my friends, but I had no idea what the significance of it was. Nice touch.

Oh boy, Sam is thinking about the blood again. No Sammy! Don’t do it!

Sam shoving Dean into a wall for asking him if he really has learned his lesson. Interesting though when you consider that Sam had just admitted to a moment of weakness when he saw all the blood and wished he could save people without killing them. So really, how could Dean not ask him that?

The fact that Ellen spotted that there is something is up between the brothers. She knows them better than they think she does.

OMG! It’s Jo! Hi Jo! Y’all can hate me all you want but I’ve missed her too. Never thought she was right for Dean, but liked her character just the same. Especially after meeting Alona Tal at a convention this year. She is really cool.

Okay I have to admit I was confused as all heck when the “demons” started pouring salt in Sam’s mouth and trying the exorcism on him. My friend figured it out though, theorizing that someone was making everyone in the town see demons where there were none. Great piece of writing, that.

Ellen and Dean going through all the clues and figuring out what was happening. Those two work well together.

Dean knowing exactly where to go in the Bible to find reference to the Apocalypse. Looks like someone’s been going to Sunday school.

War sitting down for a little chat with Sam and knowing all about his little problem. Nice way to get into Sam’s head without him having to say anything.

Dean with demon black eyes. Yowza. Is it, like, totally wrong to say just how amazingly good he looks with black eyes?

Dean’s little “Hi Jo” in the midst of the gunfight. Too cute.

That despite the fact that he’s pissed at him, Dean’s first priority is to go and save his brother.

Sam cutting off War’s finger to get the ring off and stop his power over everyone. Pretty clever since they knew they couldn’t actually kill him. Nicely done, boys.

The brothers sitting down for a heart to heart on a park bench. We’ve seen the “it’s the end of the show, now we need to talk” speech done in a lot of places and it was nice to see something new.

Sam deciding to leave Dean and stop hunting for a while – and Dean agreeing with him. Very heavy stuff and a very interesting direction for the show to take. Can’t wait to see where this goes.

Dean offering to let Sam take the Impala. Aw man, that was so sweet. I seriously got a little teary-eyed at that.

Overall an action packed episode that brought back a couple of my favorite characters and delivered some good brotherly angst.

Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: After School Special

by on Aug.09, 2009, under Drama, Horror, Television

With only a few weeks left until the new season, it looks like the CW is going to give us two episodes on Thursday nights for a while. This is fine by me, especially when I get to see such a great episode like “After School Special” again. Like any fangirl I love it when we get background on our boys and this one didn’t disappoint.

Highlights….

Okay so now a part of me is really dying to look up “reverse cowgirl” …and yet very, very afraid to do so.

I know it’s wrong but a part of me was also rooting for the fat girl. Is that wrong?

Sam in white scrubs.

Sam and Dean going back to their old high school. I never gave much thought about them actually going to school. Guess I didn’t picture them going to regular schools since they travelled so much. Then again, I didn’t exactly see Papa Winchester homeschooling them, at least not in anything other than making weapons.

Yays! Little!Sam is back. That kid is awesome. Really wish Little!Dean had been old enough to play the teen version. He was great too.

Teehee….bully doesn’t know what to do with Little!Sam. I’m sure he’s never seen a kid smaller than him that had a look in his eye like he could kill him.

OMG! Dean in the shorts. Too much. Just too much. PLUS he’s teaching them Dodgeball. Though the best part has to be how much joy he’s getting out of it (“the whistle makes me their God”).

Wow, the hand in the blender looked almost a little too real.

The fact that apparently Dean’s love of the Magic Fingers goes WAY back.

The Tarantino-esque shot of the boys from the trunk of the car.

Little!Sam writing a report about killing a werewolf on his summer vacation.

Sam not wanting to hunt and Dean not wanting anything else. Once again it makes me see their parents in each of them. Sam is so Mary and Dean is obviously John.

So the boys always carry salt on them. Nice.

The “Martha Dumptruck” reference from Dean.

Once again, I know it’s wrong but I really couldn’t wait for Sam to finally kick that bully’s ass.

The boys have spike strips in their arsenal. Impressive. I knew that trunk was well stocked but I never realized just how well stocked.

Sam? Dean? The popular kids? Okay ghosty boy, you’re very confused.

The big guy landing on Sam and squishing him…..dang, now I gotta look “full cowgirl” too. Thanks Dean.

Very interesting dichotomy. While Dean seemed to be very popular in school, he left with the most scars (even if they’re just mental ones). And Sam, who started out getting bullied, ended up enjoying the experience of feeling popular.

Overall one of my favorite episodes from last season. A great look into how the boys grew up and became who they are on the show today.

Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: Criss Angel Is A Douche Bag

by on Aug.09, 2009, under Drama, Horror, Television

With the new season of Supernatural only a month away now, I am getting excited. I’m also really looking forward to seeing the final episodes from last season all over again. I love catching things I may have missed the first time. This episode didn’t do much to move the story arc along but I still appreciated how much they managed to put into what was essentially a “filler” episode.

Highlights…..

Best. Title. Ever.

Aw… Sammy had a magic set when he was little. So did I. Of course I had mine when I was about eight, not thirteen, oh and I’m a girl. Not that I’m judging or anything.

The amount of times  “douche bag” is worked into the script.

The look on Dean’s face when “Chief” shows up.

Best line of the whole show:                                                                                                  “Oh, you ain’t been had, till you been had by the Chief.”

Wow, this little exchange says so much about the brothers…and the show.                                                                                                                                         Sam: “Do you think we’ll die before we’re old”                                                                      Dean: “Haven’t we both already?

Love that when Sam and Dean don’t quite know what to do with someone their default is to tie them up in a chair (Meg, Gordon, just to name a few).

Laughed out loud when the old guy got out of the ropes and called the cops. Ah boys, I think you’ve met your match.

Ooh… nice one Kripke. When Dean says that real magic is like crack, Sam’s reaction spoke volumes. I totally missed that the first time I saw this episode.

Nice touch that the bad guy has a scar. Made him that much easier to spot at the end after he became young again. I know it was a bit overt but hey, it sure helped me out.

Love that this guy’s magic apparently came from Barnum (of Ringling Bros. fame). Nice way to put some real history into the show, giving us the idea that this whole world could possibly exist right under our noses.

Overall an okay episode that had a few nice moments that made it fun, as always, to watch.

Positively Positive Review: Supernatural Panel, Comic-Con 2009

by on Jul.30, 2009, under Comic-Con 2009, Conventions, Panels

For the third year in a row, I managed to get seats at the very popular Supernatural panel. This year neither of the “boys” could make it, but we still had some fantastic guests – Eric Kripke, Misha Collins, Jim Beaver, Sera Gamble and Ben Edlund.

My friends and I waited in line for an hour and only just barely got in to the room in time to see Eric Kripke introducing a clip from the premiere episode of Season 5.

Highlights….. (spoiler free)

Kripke announcing that Jared and Jensen were sorry they were unable to make it and “they are shirtless and send their love.” – Does this guy know his audience or what?

Jim and Misha discussing a possible (at least in their heads) storyline this season concerning an unrequited love between Bobby and Cas.

Kripke talking about how the idea for “The Monster at the End of the Story” came about. Turns out they couldn’t figure out how to put in a guy who writes book about Sam and Dean (and have it make sense), until someone suggested that they make the character a Prophet. Then suddenly it worked. I love hearing about other people’s writing process and this little glimpse into the writer’s room on the show was amazing for me.

Kripke telling us that last year’s season was all about the brother’s being torn apart and this year will be about them coming back together……getting the most angst out of it that they possibly can. Yes! I love me some good brotherly angst.

Everyone talking about the direction that Cas will be going this year.

Being told that some of my favorite characters will be returning this year.

An audience member asking Kripke if there would be a season 6 and him replying that he was going to wait and see. The fact that it wasn’t a flat out “no”, gave me hope that we might just see a season 6.

Watching the clips from the season 4 gag reel.

Overall it was a very informative panel with Kripke and crew giving us lots of tidbits of what is to come in the final (if it is indeed to be the final) season of Supernatural. Once again, as it does every year, watching the panel has made me very excited for the season to come.
