Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Los Angeles – Search and Destroy

Another really good episode that had not only great action but some laugh out loud funny stuff in it. I can’t get enough of watching Sam and Callen together. These two macho men can act like such children at times and when they do, it makes me giggle. The rest of the team is awesome too and the whole cast contributes to making this a show to watch.

This week’s episode had the team working to track down a man who turns out to have a lot in common with Callen. As we are introduced to Flynn, we find out how he got to be where he is and in doing so, see more about who Callen is as well. The more I learn about Callen, the more curious I am about him and can’t wait to find out more.

Highlights….

Very exciting opening sequence done at LAX.

Eric’s happiness over getting to 1,000 Facebook friends and the entire conversation that came of it. Totally cracked me up as I’m on pretty much every one of the websites they mentioned.

Hetty deciding that Callen’s new color scheme for his wardrobe is black, due to the numerous bloodstains he seems to pick up.

Director Vance turning out to be Eric’s 500th Facebook friend. Awesome.

Callen’s reaction as they he listened to the description of Flynn’s rough upbringing.

Sam quoting Spock…..and it leading them to the suspect. Nice!

Callen turning rather viciously on Nate when he tried to point out that Flynn’s childhood could produce major psychological problems.

Finding out that Callen apparently grew up in LA. Interesting. I never think of people actually being raised in this town.

Sam’s description of his first tat and how it sounded suspiciously like another important milestone in a young man’s life.

Dom getting scared when the cat came out of the door. Reminds me of a similar moment when a cat jumped out and spooked Tony on NCIS. Wonder if that was done on purpose?

Awesome line from Sam (after Eric tells him that “friending” is the lingo for asking someone to be your friend on Facebook): “What’s the lingo for when someone smacks you with a flipflop?”. Now there’s a threat I’ve never heard before. I think Sam would do it too, even if he had to go hunt for a flip flop.

The interesting covers Sam and Callen come up with when they need to talk to someone without giving away who they really are.

Third mention of Facebook. Okay, so did they pay for that or what?

Sam and Callen eating Blowpops on the stakeout totally reminded me that I need to pick some up for the trick or treat’ers on Halloween.

This exchange about one of  Sam’s Blowpop wrapper creations. Callen: Is that a frog? .  Sam: It’s a swan.  Callen: from where, Chernobyl?

The entire conversation in the car that followed after that had me laughing hysterically. Callen always seems to push Sam’s buttons right up to the point where he threatens him with bodily harm.

Kensi taking out the security guys coming in on their turf by slamming their car with a battering ram and setting off the airbags. She is my hero.

Sam saying that back in the day he was pretty money at Donkeykong. Hey, me too. Though I rocked at Space Invaders too.

Hetty talking to Callen about clothing and how damaged goods can be more valuable because of their unique qualities…..when he knew she was really talking about him.

Callen trying to play a bad boy gamer. He got the bad boy part okay but needed a little help from his friends when it came to the gamer part.

Wait. A geek and a gearhead…..who can also cook? They’ve just described my dream man.

The sight of Callen’s car. How come he can’t drive THAT one all the time? It was Gorgeous!

The team using the billboard across the street to show the video. Very clever.

Callen letting Flynn go, knowing that a man so similar to him would never want to live the rest of his life in protective custody. The way they discussed how they do what they do so that others can live an idyllic life was so sad.

Hetty finding Sam’s origami swan in the end…..and calling it a duck. LOL!

Overall a great episode, giving us yet another peek into Callen’s complicated past.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Los Angeles – Predator

The third episode of this new series proved to me that it’s got was it takes to stay on my list of “must watch”. Not because it was particularly spectacular, but because it showed me that a “case ep” is strong enough on its own. It contained no mysteries about the characters and wasn’t overly dramatic. It was just a good script with action and humor, just how I like it.

Highlights….

If I haven’t mentioned it yet, I really like the opening credits to this show. Great music.

The team’s reaction to Hetty talking about (obviously) dating Frank Sinatra and George Hamilton.

The meeting in the car with Sam, Callen and Hetty’s contact. That guy was hilarious.

Okay I don’t know if that “kaleidoscope” thing is real but if it is, it’s kinda cool……and a little scary.

The fact that Hetty has the ability to intimidate everyone on the team. Loved the scene where she was mad about not being able to watch the video “with the cats and trampoline”.

Learning that the team has a boathouse they use as a secondary base. Nice.

The interrogation with the drone pilot. I thought that guy had some really good points about the dangers of using drones over real pilots.

Okay not that I don’t like Sam’s car, cuz lets face it, we all know I do, but Callen supposedly has a new Impala. Where is it? Maybe they’re hiding it cuz the new Impalas aren’t nearly as cool……just sayin’.

Callen telling Sam his ears wiggle when he tries to avoid a conversation and “it’s kinda adorable”. OMG! I know it’s wrong to call these two strong macho men cute but…..that was so darn cute!

Finding out that Callen can read Arabic (at least I believe that’s what language that was. They never said so forgive me if I got it wrong).

Callen’s awesome flying tackle to take down the suspect. Whoa!

Sam speaking Arabic to the suspect. Wow, so I guess they both speak and read it? Wonder how/when they learned?

Hetty’s anger over Sam and Callen getting the suspect’s blood all over their clothes.

Absolute best line of the ep, and of course delivered by Hetty. “These guys have spent more time with their World of Warcraft avatars, than REAL women who aren’t called ‘mom’ “.  So funny to me as I know a few guys who fit that description. LOL.

Kensi going undercover as the ex-hacker/sexy teacher. Love how the team was reading all the IMs between the students.

Dom’s distress over not getting there in time to save the guy in the bathroom. Poor guy.

Noticing how the whole team works together to solve the case without any discernable leader that I can see. Hetty may the Ops Mgr but she doesn’t go in the field. Obviously Callen and Sam are the Sr Agents in the field, but I don’t see that one is more senior than the other. It’s very interesting and quite different from the original NCIS, where Gibbs is the definite leader of his team.

The team running out of time to stop the UAV, asking the drone pilot to help and when he says he can’t as last time he failed, Dom steps in and gives him a pep talk based on how he too messed up and someone died. That was great.

The way Eric figured out how to clear out the high school in a “fast enough” way by setting off the fire alarms. Brilliant.

The pilot getting control of the missile at the last second….whew!

Callen being upset that Hetty told Sam the Nepal story and not him. Too funny.

Nate checking in on Dom. I like how his character really seems to care for all of the team, not just as part of his job but as a friend.

Overall a good episode with a great premise and lots of team interaction to solve the case.

NCIS LA - The Only Easy Day

In the first episode of NCIS: Los Angeles we got to delve a little bit into Callen’s past. This time, it’s Sam’s turn as the case ventures into his past with the SEALs. I enjoyed the banter between the characters, continuing to build on what we know about them and how they work together.

Highlights….

Loving all the beach locations they’re using on this show. Reminds me that I only made it to the beach once this past summer. Oh well.

Sam still working on the probie’s training and Hetty helping out by telling Dom to learn the “proper Pavlovian response” to Eric’s whistle. Too funny.

Hetty telling Nate that his stand-up needs work.

Sam being able to identify one of his SEAL buddies simply by seeing the man use hand signals on some grainy footage. Impressive.

Callen telling Sam “I complete you” when Sam talked about getting another partner. These guys crack me up.

Callen comparing SEALs to the seminary “If priests actually blew things up and could kill you with a Bible”….and Sam threatening to bounce him off a rock for it.

Kensi pretending to be in a fight with her boyfriend on the phone and scratching someone’s car to keep her cover. Nice touch that she also thought to find the owner and pay for the damage.

Nate’s crush on the coroner and him trying to explain why she dreamt that a gnome flipped her off.

Seeing Sam’s sweet Challenger again. I know Callen drives an Impala but it’s not nearly as cool. Maybe if he got himself a ’67 Impala, I’d be more impressed.

Hetty telling Sam… “I criticize, I scold, I chastise. I’ve even torn someone a new one, but I NEVER mock.”  – you know, I could totally see her tearing someone a new one. She may be small, but she’s wily.

Kensi being totally okay with peeing in a bag in the back of a car for the sake of surveillance. Now THAT is dedication.

Sam taking Nate’s advice and leaving the interrogation of the SEAL to Callen, until it was time to take over and talk to guy, SEAL to SEAL.

Seeing Sam pop up out of the water hazard to save the day. That was awesome.

Callen saying “I’m really trying to give up getting shot so much” – LOL!

The way Callen seems to know exactly the right way to mess with Sam to keep him from getting too far into his own head.

Overall a strong second episode of this spin off series, giving us more insight to one of the main characters and showing us more of the strong bond between Callen and Sam.

Positively Positive Review – NCIS: Los Angeles – Identity

Callen and Sam. Image from www.daemonstv.comCallen and Sam

I have been eagerly awaiting this show all summer and I was happy to see that right off the bat they concentrated on building the characters. That has always been best part of the original NCIS for me. This makes me confident that NCIS: Los Angeles may well become another one of my favorite shows.

Highlights….

Finally seeing LA in a show where it actually gets to play itself.

The little glimpses they gave us to Callen and how he’s been dealing since he got shot. He may have recovered physically, but obviously he’s still having some trouble mentally.

That freaking amazing Challenger that Sam gets to drive.

The new Ops Manager, Hetty (played by Linda Hunt). She is fantastic and I loved her character the moment she appeared on screen.

Callen putting the new guy on the spot before pointing out that the kidnap victim wasn’t actually shot in the crossfire.

The “click, click, click” they use to transition to and from commercials. Nice update from the “phoomf” on the original NCIS.

The relationship between Callen and Sam They’re great partners and I can tell that LL and Chris get along really well.

Sam spotting a suspicious car and trying to chase it down on foot. It was never gonna happen, but you gotta admire the guy for trying.

All the cool gadgets they get to use.

How all of the guys look to the one chick in the room when it’s time to talk to the sister of the victim.

The fact that Callen gets a new Impala to drive. As a huge fan of the ’67 Impala used in Supernatural, it’s fun to see its newer cousin used on this show.

Finding out a little bit about Callen’s past, but it really only bringing up more questions.

The two guys back at Operations jumping when the gun battle started on the screen. Can’t say I blame them, but it was still pretty freaking hilarious.

The fact that the kidnapped little girl’s daddy was behind it all along. Whoa. Nice twist.

Hetty putting the blanket over Callen before she left, so sweet.

Overall a great start to this spin-off of NCIS, giving us nice introductions to some new characters and a little more info on the ones we already know.
