Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: Dark Side of the Moon

Supernatural Dark Side of the Moon

After working out of town and living in hotels for the past 5 weeks, it is somehow oddly appropriate that my first review now that I’m back, is of Supernatural. Not just because I attended a Supernatural convention in LA this past weekend, but also because that’s rather a bit how my life has felt – supernatural.

This episode was full of heartbreak for all of the characters and I really feel like all of them are being tested to their very limits. It was mentioned at the con this weekend (though for the life of me I can’t remember by which guest) that they must hit rock-bottom before they can fight their way back and boy howdy, is that happening. First there was Dean looking to Heaven and begging for help, then there was Bobby lamenting the fact that he’s had to kill the love of his life more than once.

Last night we saw Dean trying to deal with the fact that some of Sam’s happiest memories are some of his worst. We also saw Sam realizing just how long his brother has been holding his family together and once again feeling guilt for his actions.

The final straw for me though was Castiel. Once he found out that God wanted no part of their battle, he looked like a man who’d lost all purpose. I’d never seen our stoic angel look so defeated and I think that was the hardest part to watch of them all. We’re used to seeing Sam and Dean, even Bobby, struggling. But so far Cas has been immune to most of it, doing without the annoying emotions that his human companions suffer with. Now he is there with them and I wonder what this will do to him, and to all of them.

I still think that we are heading for a battle between Lucifer/Sam and Michael/Dean but I have to wonder just how much these characters are going to be broken before we get there. Then again, breaking them might be exactly what needs to occur before that can happen. I’m just not sure how much more my heart can take.

Highlights….

The look on Dean’s face when he said “when I come back, I’m gonna be pissed.” – ooh boy, there’s a ghost I definitely wouldn’t want on my tail.

The use of the title card right after Dean is shot, with its effects acting as Dean’s blood splattering. Wow.

Dean and Young Sam watching the fireworks with Bob Dylan’s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” playing in the background. This is the same version of the song used in season 2’s ep “Houses of the Holy”. Took a bit of looking but I finally found that version, which is from the ‘Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid’ soundtrack.

Cas talking to Dean through the Impala’s radio and Dean telling him to get out of his dreams because he needed some “me time”.

The way the night sky looked and the bright lighting they used to show us that everything we were seeing, though it all looked fairly normal, was actually in Heaven.

Cas telling Dean “don’t go into the light” and the way he looked on the tv screen – very creepy/cool.

Dean’s toy car being a model of the great Richard Petty’s car – number 43. Awesome! My dad took me to so many of that guy’s races when I was little, I even got his autograph once.

Sam finding out that Dean “wuvs hugz” – awwww!

Poor Sam realizing that he couldn’t talk to his mother as it wasn’t his memory.

Watching grownup Dean get up and reassure his mother and picturing 4 yr old Dean having to do that in the first place. *wipes away tears*

Dean and Sam’s shared horror when they realized that one of Sam’s happiest memories, a time when he ran away, was one of Dean’s worst (as he had to deal with the wrath of their father when he returned to find that Sam had run away on Dean’s “watch”).

Watching Dean’s world continue to crumble as they stumbled across another happy memory of Sam’s, the night he ran away to Stanford, and knowing how much his brother longed to be away from him when all he wanted was for them to be together. *gets out more tissues*

Zachariah making fun of the boys for trying to run away from him. Gotta admit, that was a pretty funny concept.

The return of Ash: “Buenos dias, bitches.” LOL! – You see, THIS is why I love not being spoiled. I had no clue that Chad was going to be back on the show so him showing up out of the blow was freaking awesome!

Ash’s idea of Heaven being hanging out at the Roadhouse and chugging beer. Nice.

Ash mentioning that only a few special people can “share” Heaven, like soulmates. All three paused for a moment and I realized that Sam and Dean appeared to be “sharing”. Usually one equates lovers as soulmates, but I would assume brothers can define the term as well. Very interesting.

Ash telling Sam and Dean “You boys die more than anyone I’ve ever met.” – LOL! Very true. Also very interesting to find out that they’ve been there each time they’ve died before, even though they don’t remember.

The return of Pamela. Once again, nice surprise. Love that she smacked Dean on the head for getting her killed.

Ash saying that he was cool with getting killed because of Sam and Dean. LOL!

Pamela trying to convince Dean to accept Michael’s offer because Heaven isn’t so bad. Makes me wonder if she isn’t working for someone.

The absolutely horrible things that Mama Winchester said to Dean. Yeah I know she was under Zachariah’s control, but still. Poor Dean.

Giggling at Zachariah referring to Mary as a “MILF”.

Laughing out loud when Zachariah mentioned that he was once “employee of the month” in Heaven. Especially considering that Kurt mentioned at the convention that he plays Zachariah like a seedy real estate agent trying to get to the top.

Finding out that God knows about everything that is going on, but doesn’t think it’s His problem. He already stepped in by putting Sam and Dean on the plane and saving Castiel. Wow, I didn’t see that coming. I figured they’d never find Him, not that He’d just refuse to help. Once again, I think this is bringing us closer to the boys saying “yes” to their respective angels.

God sending Sam and Dean back from Heaven…this time with a memory of it.

Sam and Dean waking up covered in their own blood and their clothes riddled with bullet holes.

The sad way Cas said “maybe….maybe Joshua was lying.” And then giving Dean back his amulet because it was now “worthless”. So hard to watch him lose all hope like that.

Dean throwing out the amulet. To me that meant that he didn’t want to carry a symbol of his brother any longer. Not after that brother had apparently wanted nothing more than to get rid of him. I think Dean is wondering now about their entire lives, whether anything he believed in (his brother, his father), was ever true.

*gets out more tissues, blows nose and curses Kripke for breaking her heart once again*

Overall a beautiful episode that I think is bringing us ever closer to the inevitable end of the Apocalypse.

Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: My Bloody Valentine

Supernatural My Bloody Valentine

When I sat down to watch this week’s Supernatural, I have to admit that I was expecting another comedy episode. The preview last week, plus another clip I caught on the fan page on Facebook, made it seem like this was going to be a regular laugh-fest. Boy was I wrong.

Instead we saw some of the hardest scenes I’ve had to watch with the Winchesters. After all the hard work it took to get Sam off the demon blood, Famine rides into town and gives it right back to him. The worst part is that he has to use it to save them all and in doing so, it gives him more power than ever and makes it that much harder for him to come down again.

Plus there was Dean. I knew Dean wasn’t happy but hey, when is Dean ever really happy, right? I had no idea just how bad off he was. Even when he didn’t appear to be affected by Famine, I believed his explanation of being “well fed”. In the beginning I even thought maybe the sadness we were seeing was a symptom of Famine, since Dean could be yearning for a life he didn’t have. Neither was correct and it turned out that the truth was much worse. Dean has given up the fight in the worst possible way, all the way down to his very soul and even goes so far as to beg for help from Heaven.

We have six long weeks to find out what happens next and I am very nervous to see who (or what) answers Dean’s plea.

Highlights….

Giggling over the title, seeing as how Jensen starred in a movie by the same name just last year (awesome flick by the way).

That opening scene was just….wow.

Finding that Dean used to love Valentine’s Day and dubbed it “Unattached Drifter Christmas”

“Now prison maybe…” *foot falls off chair* – okay seriously, that was hysterical. Loved the way they cut that little sequence.

Sam’s appetite for demon blood returning and him being able to hear a demon’s heart beating, vampire-like.

I liked the coroner – that guy was cool.

Dean shoving a human heart at Sam and saying “be my valentine.” – LOL!

Dean and Cas having a phone conversation while standing right in front of each other.

Finding out that Cupid is a “cherub, third class.” – that means there at least two more classes of cherubs. Wow, who knew it was that organized?

The look on the boys’ faces as a great big fat (and I’m assuming naked since we never saw above his knees or below his chest) guy hugged them.

“This is their handshake” – “I don’t like it” – “No one likes it” – LOL!! Awesome lines.

Cas clumsily trying to reassure Cupid.

Finding out that a Cupid was involved with setting up Mary and John so that Dean and Sam would be born. Whoa, I guess Heaven was not messing around.

Dean asking “what’s the worse than happen, right?” – Really Dean? After all that you’ve been through, you still ask that question??

Another Doublemint moment as Sam and Dean ask “for what?” as one when Cas mentions that his hunger is a clue to what is happening.

Cas’s hunger for burgers coming from his vessel. Interesting. I didn’t think a vessel could have any effect on the angel inhabiting them.

Sam admitting to Dean that the Horsemen got to him and that his demon bloodlust had returned. I was so afraid he was going to try and hide it. It was hard watching Dean handcuff him to that sink though, even if he asked for it.

Feeling sorry for Misha knowing that by the end of the shoot he was probably so sick of hamburgers. LOL.

Dean telling Cas that he was “well fed”. Great line and it made a lot of sense…..too bad he was wrong.

Sam taking on two demons, his face covered in blood and telling one of them to “wait your turn”. Okay that actually gave me chills. Scary.

Dean only waiting two seconds before knowing that something was wrong with Cas.

Being so very, very happy that Dean didn’t pull out the guy in french fry vat.

Cas, on the floor and gorging himself on raw meat. Ick.

Dean equating Famine’s powers with the phrase “Coocoo for Cocoa Puffs”. Only Dean could do that.

Famine reaching inside to see Dean’s soul and finding the emptiness he’s been hiding. I didn’t expect that at all.

Dean calling Sam “Sammy” when he sees his brother on the demon blood again – seems like it’s been a while since he’s done that.

Sam taking down a room full of demons all at once. Whoa. I don’t think he was ever that strong before and it was then that I really started worrying about how he would make it out of this whole thing.

Sam killing the demons inside Famine in order to kill Famine himself. That was freaking brilliant.

The look Dean gave Sam, knowing what they were going to have to lock him up again to detox, even after he saved all of their lives. Ugh.

n breaking down and looking to Heaven to ask for help. That was hard to watch. It’s so not like him and now I really have to wonder who’s going to answer and what they’re going to do to “help” him. A part of me was even expecting him to just go ahead and say “yes” right there, bringing Michael down upon him.

Overall a really amazing episode and not at all what I expected when I sat down to watch it.

Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: The Song Remains The Same

Young John and Mary Winchest in Supernatural - The Song Remains The Same

For the past couple of episodes, Supernatural has given us a lot of humor mixed with just a little bit of the myth arc. Just when I was beginning to wonder what had happened to the apocalypse, Michael, Lucifer and well, everything, they gave us this fantastic episode.

Anna is out to kill Sam and Dean’s parents so that the two of them are never born and the apocalypse never happens. Cas brings them all back and by doing so, allows both brothers to have conversations with their parents I never thought we’d see, both of which brought me to tears. Dean also got to have a conversation with Michael.

Highlights….

The moment I heard “Cherry Pie” by Warrant, I knew Dean was in a strip club. Sure it was in his dream, but still.

How Cas always makes an entrance. Remind me to keep lots of extra light bulbs on hand in case he ever wants to come visit me….not that I’d mind of course.

Cas saying “You come near Sam Winchester and I’ll kill you.” – So amazing to see how much Cas has changed – calling the boys his friends, protecting them to the death.

Sam asking Cas if the plan to kill him would actually work. He’s so willing to sacrifice himself, if it means an end to it all.

Cas’ stock answer whenever he doesn’t understand what Dean says – “I don’t understand that reference”. It cracks me up because the way he says it, you can tell he’s said it a LOT.

Dean warning Sam to bend his knees before Cas sends them back. Poor guy, he’s been tossed around by Cas a lot.

Dean knowing they had made it to 1978 when he spotted a Pinto. I think my dad used to drive one of those. LOL.

Cas saying that he was doing much better than he expected after taking them all back….and then promptly coughing up blood and passing out. Eek.

Dean saying that Cas is “tough for a little nerdy dude with wings.” – Awwww!

Sam’s reaction to meeting the younger version of his parents and how he couldn’t stop staring at Mary. OMG my heart was just breaking for him.

Dean describing angels as “twice as strong as demons, and bigger dicks.”

The Anna vs Mary totally awesome chick fight.

Sam using the sigil to send away Anna. I had just been asking myself “where the heck is Sam??” – nicely done!

John threatening to turn the car around with Mary in the front seat and Dean and Sam in the back, almost like real family road trip…OMG! So hilarious.

Watching young John going from friendly family man to the guy who does whatever it takes to protect his family, even drawing a symbol he doesn’t understand in his own blood. So odd to see Dean showing young John how to do the things that older John taught him. My poor head was spinning.

The whole conversation between young John and Sam. Young John being angry at how any man could raise his children like that and then Sam defending a man he used to hate, explaining how it was possible for a man to do what his father did and saying that he’d never got the chance to tell his dad that he loved him…..all of it said to the man he was talking about. Okay yeah, major tears were flowing for me by then.

Anna calling 1978 Uriel to help kill the Winchesters. I didn’t expect that.

Dean telling Mary that he was her son. I broke into tears the moment he said it. I had no idea he was going to do that and it shocked the crap out of me.

Everything that Dean said to convince Mary that he was her son – the soup, singing ‘Hey Jude’. So not fair that this show made me cry twice in less than ten minutes.

Sam coming in and telling Mary that she has to leave John so that neither of them will ever be born…..and then finding out that Mary is already pregnant with Dean. Gah!

Watching Sam die….again.

Michael showing up inside young John and killing Anna (at least I’m assuming she’s dead, that didn’t seem like something she could come back from).

I’m with Michael – the conversation between he and Dean was way overdue and I loved it.

Ha! I KNEW it! The vessel thing is a bloodline. I knew that John was connected too.

Seeing the parallels again between Michael & Lucifer and Sam & Dean .

Michael pointing out that all the seemingly random things; have all happened because of fate and there is nothing they can do to change it.

Michael telling Dean that he won’t leave him a drooling mess when he leaves his body. Hmm…interesting that he said that. Once again, makes me nearly certain that Michael will end up in Dean someday and I cannot wait. I’m so looking forward to seeing what Jensen does with that character.

The way Cas just popped into the motel room, very surprised he made it….and promptly passing out again. I love that Cas was basically unconscious through the entire episode.

Dean’s description of “Team Free Will” – LOL!

John and Mary standing in the nursery with Baby!Dean safely inside his mommy’s tummy, and them looking at the little angel figurine. Is it wrong that it made me wonder if they bought a little devil figurine before Sam was born?

Overall another tear jerker of an episode, bringing us closer to the inevitable battle that we all know is coming.

Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: The Real Ghostbusters

by on Nov.13, 2009, under Drama, Horror, Television

Sam and Dean find themselves at a Supernatural convention in Supernatural, season 5, episode 9 “The Real Ghostbusters”. Image from www.deamonstv.comSupernatural The Real Ghostbusters

Alright folks, confession time – I will admit that I have been to a Supernatural convention. Okay so it’s been three so far, one was in England and I already have tickets to my fourth, but hey, who’s counting right? So I have been eagerly awaiting this episode ever since I saw the clips last week and I am glad to report that it did not disappoint.

Highlights…………

A parking lot full of Impalas! LOL. Ha! I WISH all us fans had one of our own.

It’s scary to say that I’ve met a couple girls like Becky.

Love all the costumes, though I’ve never seen that many good ones. Maybe I should start working on a scarecrow outfit for next year.

Laughing my ass of as I saw the Impala coffee cup that I was eyeing at the last con. Oh man, now I really want it again.

I love that most of the people at this con are men. Guess that’s why they call it fiction.

The look on Sam and Dean’s faces at the words “homo-erotic subtext”.

The Hook Man totally looks like the real dude.

Wondering just how one goes about making a deal with an archangel for book rights.

Is it wrong that I kinda wanna do a “hunt” at the next con? Anyone with me?

All the Sam and Deans in suits and showing fake FBI badges. Can I just say how much I love that this show can make fun of itself so well?

Fake EMF ftw!

Oooh….creepy kid ghost…and the best line ever: “Holy Mother of Crap!”

Is it me or did Dean use Joey from Friends’ line on the fake ghost chick? Doesn’t “How you doin’?” belong to him?

A real ghost showing up at the convention. That rocks! I would seriously pay extra for that.

Okay Becky licking her hand and blowing it at Sam? Seriously disgusting.

The fake Sam and Dean and their fake deep voices.

Dean yelling at the guys saying that his life is not for their amusement. Okay, now I’m feeling a little guilty.

Fake Sam and Dean freaking out at the sight of a real grave…and a real ghost who actually tried to kill them.

The creepy ghost children killing the Hook Man, who kept making fun of Supernatural. Talk about poetic justice.

Dean telling Sam to give the fake ghost girl “the puppy dog thing”. Referencing Sam’s puppy dog eyes that the fans talk about so much. Nice!

Aw….fake Sam and Dean want to help “because that’s what Sam and Dean would do.”

Don’t you just hate it when your cell phone goes off when you’re trying to discipline little creepy ghost children while pretending to be their teacher from the last century? I know I do.

Fake Sam and Dean realizing how hard it actually is to dig a grave. I totally put that line into a fanfic I wrote once.

Chuck riffing while Sam and Dean are fighting the ghost. Hilarious!

Chuck saving the day. Go Chuck! Loved the “Six Million Dollar Man” sound effects too.

Is it wrong that I think Chuck is cute now? Dangit, I’m such a sucker for the hero, especially a nerdy one.

Dean seriously thinking about them putting their weapons on bungies. Huh, not a bad idea.

Dean thanking fake Sam and Dean for saving their lives, then admitting he’s the “real Dean” and neither of them believing him. Too funny.

Fake Sam and Dean pointing out that saving the world and having a brother who would die for you was not so sucky after all.

Fake Sam and Dean turning out to be a couple. Freaking awesome! Nice nod to Wincest.

“Like a monkey on the sun it was too hot to live.” – LOL!!!

Sam threatening Chuck with “we have guns and we’ll find you.” – hilarious!

Brilliant. The show figures out how to use the story within the story to a help the current story. Sam gets a lead on the Colt from a missing “scene” in one of the books. So freaking brilliant.

The outtakes of Rob Benedict (as Chuck), riffing to the audience and saying “The way I look at it, it’s really not jumping the shark if you never come back down.” – Now I’m dying to know which of the writers said that, perhaps Kripke himself?

Overall another fun episode where the show got to make fun of itself and the fans once again while still managing to give us little glimpses into the lives of Sam and Dean and also a clue to the Colt’s whereabouts to boot.

Positively Positive Review – Supernatural: I Believe the Children Are Our Future

by on Oct.18, 2009, under Drama, Horror, Television

Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and guest star Gattlin Griffith in Supernatural, season 5, episode 6 “I Believe the Children Are Our Future”. Image from www.supernaturalfansonline.comSupernatural Believe Children

This episode was a standard “MOTW” (monster of the week) for Supernatural….that turns out to be not so much. Sam and Dean go to a town where mysterious things are happening and people are dying in strange ways. Everything seems to add up to a normal (well, normal for them anyway) type of case fot the two hunters. Until they find out the boy responsible is demon spawn and Cas wants to kill him.

Highlights….

The way the kid said “I can’t, I’m dead” when the babysitter asked him to go to bed. Such a great delivery, totally cracked me up.

A guy giving us the opening scream for once. That dude totally screamed like a girl.

Finding out the girl scratched her brains out. Ick. Though I’m confused, wouldn’t it be hard to get past your skull? Hmmm..

Dean talking about his babysitters. Funny but I never thought of Dean having babysitters since we’ve always seen him doing the babysitting for Sam.

Ha! I saw that coming. When I saw the guy’s burned up boots I totally knew it was going to be because of a hand buzzer. Don’t ask me why.

Dean and Sam gearing up to test the buzzer. Where in the heck did they get the goggles? Very Dr. Horrible-like.

Sam calling Dean “Mr. Wizard”.

Dean of course snacking on the ham once they were done testing.

Sam rolling his eyes at Dean’s excitement over the whoopee cushion.

The guy at the magic shop wearing a Siegfried and Roy t-shirt.

The very creepy tooth fairy. Somehow I never pictured her….er him, looking like that.

Dean doing the “his face froze that way” face for Sam.

Sam acting surprised that Dean was still snarfing the ham when he walked in. Really Sam? Don’t you know your brother better than that?

Dean’s hair palm! LOL!!! Okay I have to say that as soon as they realized everything was based on stuff kids believe I wondered if we’d see that particular myth come to life. Didn’t think the show had the guts to do it but they did. Nice!!

(NOTE: I’m updating this post to add a little info on what Dean’s hairy palms meant. Apparently not everyone knows this myth. Well there’s no delicate way to say this so I’m just gonna come right out with it…it means he was masturbating, folks. Oh and yes, Sam was right, the other myth about doing…erm…”that” is that one can go blind. Guess Dean’s lucky that Jesse hadn’t been told that one. LOL)

Sam’s disgust when he saw Dean’s hand and Dean’s explanation (“I was bored and that nurse was hot”) was hilarious.

The kid telling Sam “it’s called soup. You heat it up and eat it.” – I think I like this kid.

Dean telling the kid that the hand buzzer was harmless and then trying it on Sam to prove it.

The way they shot the whole scene as Jesse’s mom talked about what happened to her while she was pregnant. The extreme close-ups made her story even more scary and sad.

Huh, when Dean said they needed help I kinda thought they were gonna call Bobby. Interesting that they called Cas instead.

Cas very seriously telling Sam and Dean that the kid is demon spawn……and then sitting down on the whoopee cushion. The sounds it produced, Sam and Dean’s reaction and the ultra calm way Cas declared “that wasn’t me”  had me rolling on the floor!

Cas getting in Sam’s face and pointing out that Sam didn’t make the right choice when it was put before him and now Cas couldn’t make that mistake again. Wow. Didn’t realize how much anger Cas had towards Sam about everything.

Cas going to the boy, speaking so softly and reassuring, obviously not happy about what he had to was very frightening and yet I felt for both of them. The boy who had no knowledge of what was happening and the angel forced to do something so heinous as killing a child.

Once again an uber serious moment followed by an uber funny one. I totally want a Cas doll now.

Dean telling Jesse that he was a super hero, was going to be trained as one and even the guy who was going to train him was in a wheelchair. Aw, so cute!

The demon leaving Sam alone saying that she wasn’t allowed to hurt him but then proceeding to slam Dean around the room because “hurting you is encouraged.” Yikes.

Unlike Lucifer, listening to the demon bitch tell the boy the whole story of his life and try to talk him into going with her just made me wanna smack her. I was so happy when the kid slammed her in a chair and shut her up.

Sam telling Jesse everything and that he was hoping Jesse could make the right choice when he couldn’t…..okay cue some tears.

Dean holding the Cas doll and asking Jesse to turn him back because “he’s a buddy of mine” – awww!

Sam telling Jesse that he and Sam were freaks themselves. If anyone can begin to understand what that kid is going through, it would be those two.

No surprise to me that the boy took off. Honestly, I think I might too after hearing that sort of news. Doubt that’s the last we’ll see of him though. I wonder….if he can kill angels with a word, could he do the same to demons or Lucifer?

Oh man, Dean admitting that he wished his father had lied to them, that was almost too much. So sad, but really what other choice did John have?

Overall a strong episode that started out funny but ended pretty sad as Sam and Dean had to face some hard fact from their past while trying to protect a young boy from the horrors they’ve had to endure all their lives.
