Positively Positive Review – Website: Microsoft Hohm

Pretty House

Recently I was asked to review the beta version of the Microsoft Hohm site. I had never even heard of it before and I was intrigued, so I went right over to check it out and sign up for a free account.

Microsoft Hohm offers a lot of Energy saving tips, some of which even I didn’t know, and I consider myself fairly well educated on the subject. I knew about things like changing out traditional light bulbs for LED/compact fluorescents, but I hadn’t actually thought about setting my laptop to hibernate when I’m not using it. Yeah, I know, that should have been obvious, but still, I hadn’t thought about it. You can bet I’m gonna start doing that now.

Other info I got was about how to make your home appliances more energy efficient. Once again, there were things I already knew (like wrapping a water heater in a blanket), but others I did not (like wrapping your hot and cold water pipes, too).

Now as an apartment dweller and not a homeowner, I can’t follow all of the tips. Those of you who are homeowners, I think will really see the benefits of this site. You get to fill out something called a “home profile” which asks a lot of questions about the energy used in your home. Then based upon the info you give them, they provide specific data on how much home energy you are currently using and how you can reduce your costs as well as your carbon footprint.

Overall I found the experience very educational, even as a lowly apartment renter. I can’t wait to have a home of my own to be able to control a lot more of my energy usage. I don’t see myself as the kind of person who will be riding a bike in my living room in order to run my tv set, but I still care about this planet of ours and anything I can do to reduce the amount of waster energy I use, as well as reduce my energy bills, and I’m all for it.
