Positively Positive Review – Castle: When The Bough Breaks

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic in Castle, season 2, episode 5 “When The Bough Breaks”Castle Bough

This week’s episode of Castle had more than just the standard murder mystery storyline. There was that of course, but along with it were a couple of other smaller (but no less important) storylines.

Castle gets a visit from his agent and finds out that he’s being offered to write a “certain English spy”. They spend the whole rest of the episode avoiding the words “Bond” or “007”. I’m assuming they didn’t get the rights to say it.

When Beckett gets wind of the offer, she seems to have mixed feelings. At first she is happy to hear she will no longer be saddled with a writer shadowing her every move. But after that she appears perhaps a little sad. At Castle’s book signing party, Beckett looks flustered as he approaches her. When he moves on to talk about the case we see a moment of (could it be?) disappointment that the conversation didn’t go elsewhere.

The rest of the episode they work on the case, keeping us wondering if this might be the last one they ever do together. I was so distracted by them that I almost forgot about the case, until it was solved. In a fantastic twist, they find that the woman was killed because a man switched her baby with his own son. The scene where the husband of the murdered woman gets to meet his son, (a child he never knew was switched for the child he raised until a tragic death) brought me to tears.

In the end Castle is offered more money than he can refuse to write more Nikki Heat books and Beckett is basically ordered to keep helping him. Not a surprise at all, but the way they did it (with each of them on the phone as they find out the news from different people), was hilarious.

Overall a funny, romantic and poignant episode that promises more to come as we find out that our favorite team will be working together for a very long time.
